The role

We are currently seeking five (5) talented Materials Technicians/ Inspectors of Works to join our Construction and Pavements team in Lesotho for the upgrading of the Mpiti to Sehlabathebe Road (91km) Project located in the Qachas Nek district of Lesotho.

The position will be based at the Mpiti to Sehlabathebe Road (91 km), which starts in the southwest part of Lesotho, near Qacha’s Nek and then runs along the south-eastern boundary with South Africa, ending at the Sehlabathebe National Park.  The project entails the upgrading of the existing gravel road to an asphalt surfaced road. The project duration is 36 months, which may be extended. 

***The Lesotho Roads Directorate has advised that preference will be given to Lesotho nationals for these positions.

Key Responsibilities

With a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience, the successful candidates will be responsible for the following:

• Identifying, collecting, documenting and submitting construction material samples to the site laboratory
• Construction materials to be sampled include soil, gravel, cement and bitumen treated material, asphalt and concrete
• Density testing of compacted road works using nuclear density testing equipment
• Performing and documenting field testing to evaluate the acceptability of construction materials, including concrete slump test, DCP test, ring and ball test, sand patch test, site viscosity test, Marvel test and coring of asphalt and concrete
• Assisting the Senior Materials Technician with visual assessments of construction work for compliance with specifications, including drainage structures, gravel and stabilised layers, asphalt and road furniture
• Assisting the Laboratory Manager with compiling materials test reports and material as-built records
• Assisting the Senior Materials Technician with measurement of quantities

Qualifications, Skills and Experience Required

Suitable applicants will have/ be:

• Candidates must have one of the following minimum combinations of qualification and experience:
o National Diploma in Civil Engineering with 2 years’ relevant experience
o Grade 12 with 8 years’ relevant experience
(Relevant experience shall include working as a Materials Technician on road upgrade projects or pavement rehabilitation projects)
• Knowledge and experience in road building materials including gravel, cement and bituminous stabilised layers and asphalt surfacing.
• Knowledge of  material sampling, testing and evaluation
• Ability to work both independently and in a team oriented environment
