Manager: Ethics – Quality and Regulation

The CSIR has a vacancy for a Manager in ethics, quality and regulation within the RDI Portfolio. The purpose of the role is to enable and support research that complies with the national and international standards andrequirements for research ethics. The role is also responsible for creating a conducive environment for researchers and to ensure high quality research and development and adherence to all regulatory research requirements. This position is based in Pretoria.


Key responsibilities:

  • Develop processes and systems in line with the national regulator, the National Health Research Ethics Council;
  • Ensure that the CSIR is registered with various national and international bodies;
  • Recommend to the CSIR Board the appointment of Research Ethics Committee members;
  • Ensure that the CSIR research ethics committee is operational and efficient through the oversight of the research ethics committee secretariat;
  • Work with the chair of the ethics committee to ensure that an annual ethics reports is presented to the CSIR Board;
  • Ensure that reports are submitted timely to the National Health Research Ethics Council
  • Perform regular national and international benchmarks to continually improve processes
  • Management of reputational risk related to research ethics;
  • Raise awareness to the CSIR research community regarding research ethics policies, procedures and standards;
  • Lead the development of research ethics capacity in the organisation through education, training and information dissemination initiatives;
  • Interact with quality and compliance structures of the organisation (i.e. risk management office, legal, internal audit, etc.) to identify vulnerabilities and recommend remedial actions
  • Contribute to the design of regulatory compliance, quality, sustainability and product safety framework;
  • Implement initiatives that will improve the quality of research and development;
  • Nurture the adoption of best-practice research management;
  • Provide all the necessary support for researcher mobility and career advancement.

Qualifications, skills and experience:

  • A Master’s degree in biological science and related field with a research ethics training certificate;
  • A doctoral degree in science, engineering or technology will be an added advantage;
  • At least five year’s research ethics experience of which three should be in a supervisory role;
  • The following competencies are essential:

    • Verbal and written communication.
