Job Purpose

The Manager is responsible for overseeing and managing the Collections Department to ensure an efficient debt‑recovery process. This role involves developing collection strategies to improve recovery rates, supervising staff, and ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

The incumbent plays a critical role in maintaining positive client relationships while maximising recovery of outstanding debts and minimising financial losses to the Bank.


Key Duties and Responsibilities

Strategic Planning and Execution

• Create and implement effective strategies to improve recovery rates and minimise financial losses
• Set targets and monitor performance of the Debt Collection Team
• Conduct negotiations with debtors to establish repayment plans
• Direct and oversee all collection procedures to ensure legal and regulatory compliance
• Resolve high‑level disputes or complaints regarding collection practices
• Monitor strategic initiatives, identify bottlenecks, and recommend corrective actions
• Recruit, train, and manage the Collections Team
• Maintain relationships with external debt collectors and private‑sale auctioneers


Governance, Compliance and Risk Alignment

• Maintain a comprehensive understanding of the Bank’s Credit and Recoveries Policies
• Oversee and recommend write‑off processes for uncollectible debts
• Conduct risk assessment and analysis of potential clients
• Perform regular audits on the loan book to ensure regulatory compliance


Stakeholder Engagement and Strategic Communication

• Communicate with customers to address discrepancies and resolve disputes
• Prepare high‑quality reports on collection activities and progress for the Chief Credit Officer and Credit Committee
• Represent the Bank in engagements with the Central Bank, Government Ministries, and other relevant stakeholders including auctioneers, attorneys, and land authorities
• Monitor and control billing on externally managed portfolios to ensure timely application and collection of receivables
• Conduct regular meetings with internal and external debt‑collection teams to review progress


Qualifications and Experience

• LLB or Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management, Finance, or a related field
• Master’s Degree in a related discipline will be an added advantage
• Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in Credit and Collections, with at least two (2) years in a managerial role
• Proven experience in collections or accounts receivable
• Familiarity with Consumer Protection Laws and Regulations
• Strong organisational and time‑management skills

• Strong analytical skills to assess customers’ financial status and determine appropriate collection strategies
• Solid financial knowledge across collections, credit management, and general financial operations
• Legal understanding of debt‑collection laws and regulatory requirements
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and database systems
• Strong negotiation skills with diverse customer groups
