CHAI’s global malaria program provides direct technical and operational support to countries around the globe to strengthen their malaria programs and reduce the burden of this preventable, treatable disease. We support governments to scale up effective interventions for prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and surveillance, with the goals of sustainably reducing the number of malaria-related illnesses and deaths worldwide in the short-term and accelerating progress towards malaria elimination in the long term.

Overview of role

CHAI is seeking a highly motivated individual with strong management skills, public health experience, robust analytical and writing skills, and extensive organization and communication skills to serve as Malaria Regional Manager for Mozambique, South Africa and Eswatini. In Southern Africa, CHAI works hand-in-hand with governments to help them use available resources effectively to achieve their goals of eliminating malaria in the near term. To coordinate CHAI’s malaria elimination support activities across countries within the Southern Africa region, the Regional Manager supports CHAI’s country teams with strategic planning, prioritization of programmatic efforts, staffing, monitoring and evaluating progress, donor reporting, and facilitates communications and joint work-planning between county teams and global technical staff. The Malaria Regional Manager is expected to travel frequently within the region. Responsibilities
Manage the portfolio of CHAI malaria work across South Africa, Eswatini, and Mozambique, collaborating with country offices and global technical staff to develop and update evidence-based and technically sound strategies for CHAI’s malaria programs.
Support development of annual country-specific work plans and assist country teams to manage effective implementation of planned activities, including adherence to timelines and coordinating review and feedback from technical teams.
Assess progress against goals and donor commitments to measure impact, identify program bottlenecks or weaknesses, help devise solutions to strengthen programs as necessary and ensure teams are consistently updated on progress and results.
Ensure the quality of products and documents produced by CHAI team members, including strategic plans, guidelines and standard operating procedures, presentations, project reports and implementation updates, and/or communications with partners.
Facilitate knowledge-sharing across global, regional, and country-based team-members to institutionalize knowledge and ensure consistency of CHAI’s technical and operational support to malaria programs.
Support contract and grant management, including development of concept notes, proposals, donor reports, and contractual agreements, and coordinate development of programmatic and financial updates.
Maintain strong relationships with partner organizations and initiatives working on malaria in the region to coordinate CHAI’s work with that of others.
Represent CHAI at regional meetings and conferences, manage relationship and coordination with regional bodies including the Elimination 8 and the MOSASWA regional initiative and prioritize CHAI’s support to and engagement with these entities.
Directly manage a small team of 1-2 associates, including monitoring performance, adherence to deadlines and quality of deliverables.
Oversee initiation of CHAI support to neglected tropical disease programs working in the region.
Other responsibilities as needed.
Qualifications
Master’s Degree in a relevant field (e.g., Public Health, Business Administration); or Bachelor’s degree minimum with exceptional experience
5+ years of work experience with increasing levels of responsibility and leadership
Exceptional written and oral communication and presentation skills, including effective communication of results through data visualization to audiences of varying technical backgrounds
Knowledge of malaria, disease elimination, and/or other major global infectious disease problems
Experience in strategy development, planning, and project implementation
Experience in capacity building and support management
Experience working and communicating with government officials and multilateral organizations
Demonstrated analytical, quantitative, and problem solving skills
High levels of proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint
Ability to work independently in unstructured settings and to adapt to new environments and challenges
Experience working remotely with a decentralized team
Willingness to travel 40-60%
