STANDARD MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- First degree in Agriculture, Agricultural Economics, Marketing, Development Economics, or any other related field.
- Courses in statistics and qualitative data analysis are desirable.
- At least five years of progressively responsible experience in programme related functions of which significant experience (2 or more years) has to be relate to agricultural value chains, market linkages for smallholder farmers and/or market analysis.
- Fluency in English and Sesotho: understanding, writing, reading and speaking.
Under the direct supervision of the Activity Manager, and the general supervision of the Deputy Country Director
To provide technical support to smallholder farmers and other value chain actors, particularly women, in climate-smart agriculture, food quality and safety, marketing of nutritious foods and financial services.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)
- Develop operational partnerships and maintain established strategic partnerships to provide technical support to smallholder farmers in climate-smart agriculture to increase marketable food surpluses;
- Enhance smallholder farmers capacity in aggregation, post-harvest handling and storage techniques, food quality and safety, to improve market access;
- Conduct training needs assessment for both new and old farmer organizations, develop training materials in areas related to market access, and oversee the training of the smallholder farmers organizations;
- Conduct marketing capacity assessments for smallholder farmers organizations and give recommendations for registration as WFP vendors;
- Support the design and implementation of procurement modalities that are smallholder farmers friendly, while ensuring that they are consistent with WFP policies, Executive Board decisions, and other relevant guidance;
- Work with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, and the Ministry of Small Business Development, Cooperatives and Marketing to organize annual market linkage forums to link smallholder farmers to other formal markets beyond WFP market;
- Introduce viable value chains to resilience building communities and link them to markets for sustainability;
- Ensure gender mainstreaming in the Local Purchase Initiative and support women with labour saving technologies to ease drudgery in their agricultural activities;
- Maintain presence at key national and sub national forums and advocate for SHF’s access to markets;
- Provide support to the M&E unit in organizing baseline and annual monitoring surveys for farmers organizations and traders, support market information data collection and analysis, as well as market intelligence, and contribute to the lessons learned and success stories;
- Provide inputs for the quarterly and annual reports and for the preparation of the local purchase briefs and other related materials;
- Participate in resource mobilization as necessary including drafting proposals and participating in negotiations with potential donors; and
- Perform other related duties as required.
