The Lesotho National Development Corporation conducted a trade and investment mission alongside the margins of Forum on China Africa Cooperation (FOCAC). The mission commenced with a site visit to an integrated poultry project located in Shandong Province in China, followed by a business breakfast held in Beijing and attended by 150 delegates on the 2nd September 2018 followed by several bilateral meetings with potential investors in agribusiness, mobile phone assembly, automotive manufacturing, smart city infrastructure development as well as Research and innovative solutions amongst others. To mention a few:
· In agro-processing, a prospect has been secured in tomatoes production and processing for regional and global market, with more than 100,000 tons of output annually. The investors will be in the country later this month or early October to assess the canning facilities at Masianokeng and finalize agreement with LNDC.
· The automotive company will bring to Lesotho a M5.7 billion worth of investment for a vehicle assembly plant together with some component suppliers for the assembly plant. The project will be rolled out as a cluster model or integrated facility with backward linkages for production of components and forward linkages on the distribution and aftermarket services. It is envisaged that the facilities will be housed at the Ha Belo industrial estate that is under development in Botha Bothe
· In support of LNDC’s quest to build research and innovation capability in Lesotho in partnership with higher learning institutions such as NUL, the MOU with one of China’s largest and oldest university, Tsinghua provides a platform to strengthen public safety systems and smart cities; and to commercialize research and innovation.
