Applications are invited from suitably qualified local candidates for the following vacant position tenable at the Ministry of Law and Justice.


POSITION: LEGAL AID COURT CLERK

Grade: C
Station: Legal Aid – Maseru
Responsible to: Legal Aid Officer


JOB SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of the Legal Aid Officer, the incumbent is responsible for the administration of justice and management through case management and execution of court processes.


DUTIES

1. TO ADMINISTER AND FACILITATE ADMINISTRATION OF JUSTICE

  • Keeps the civil records and the criminal records.
  • Registers civil and criminal cases.
  • Issues, allocates, and supervises court processes to court messengers.
  • Ensures cases go to Court Presidents and sets dates of hearing.
  • Notes short summary of judgement in the register.
  • Keeps register for receiving court processes.
  • Receives court processes.
  • Issues referral letters, radio messages.
  • Captures information in the system.

2. JUDICIAL ADMINISTRATION AND MANAGEMENT

  • Attends to enquiries and complaints relating to service of court process and, where necessary, refers them to the Legal Aid Officer.
  • Prepares own work-plan and reports on performance.
  • Engages civil messengers of court in consultation with the Legal Aid Officer.
  • Supervises staff under his/her control.
  • Prepares monthly, quarterly, and annual reports of performance and submits them to the Legal Aid Officer.
  • Issues requisitions.

JOB SPECIFICATION

Education and Training

  • Certificate in Local Law or equivalent qualification
    OR
  • COSC/GCE/LGCSE

Working Experience

  • Minimum of three (3) years relevant court working experience.

  • Computer literacy
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills

RESPONSIBILITY

For work of others: The incumbent takes full responsibility for the performance of staff under his/her supervision.
