We have an excellent opportunity for a Legal Adviser (Criminal Justice Systems and Cybercrime) to join the Rule of Law Section within our Governance and Peace Directorate (GPD).
The successful candidate will lead on the development and implementation of effective and impact-enhancing policies, strategies and projects in support of the efforts of Commonwealth countries to implement the Commonwealth Equal Access to Justice Declaration and Action Plan, build effective criminal justice systems, including effective anti-cybercrime legislative, policy, institutional and multilateral frameworks.
Other responsibilities entailed in this role include (but are not limited to):
- Identifying key challenges affecting criminal justice systems in the Commonwealth (using systems analysis and other planning tools) and developing – in close collaboration with key internal and external stakeholders – innovative solutions and robust support programmes;
- Crafting and delivering legal and policy advice and technical assistance to Commonwealth member countries;
- Taking responsibility for the results-based management of projects and project teams, including for project implementation, reporting and evaluation;
- Working in close collaboration with other Legal Advisors in the Rule of Law Section and in other sections across the Secretariat on undertaking research on the reforms required to strengthen criminal justice systems;
- Consulting and liaising with law ministries in Commonwealth member countries, accredited organisations and other key stakeholders to determine the scope of work and parameters of assistance required to strengthen criminal justice systems in the Commonwealth.
To be considered, you will need to be qualified to practise law as a barrister or a solicitor in a Commonwealth member country and hold at least ten (10) years’ post-qualification work experience in a relevant government ministry, prosecution department, private legal practice, an intergovernmental or non-governmental body, or academia. You will also need working knowledge of criminal justice systems in developing countries. Candidates who hold a master’s degree with a specialisation in criminal law and criminal justice will have an added advantage.
