POST NO: 2112 – LECTURER/SENIOR LECTURER OF HYDROLOGY

The National University of Lesotho Water Institute (NULWI) is seeking a professional with broad expertise and experience in water science, particularly Hydrological Modelling of surface water as applied to water resources assessment and development at catchment and regional scale. NULWI is a newly founded research institute that conducts research in areas of water resources engineering and management with a view to influence policy development on water resources. The Institute also admits students pursuing Msc in Water Resources Engineering and Management with a very strong research component.

PROFILE OF THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE

Research: The successful candidate should have a core research expertise in the aspect of rainfall-runoff modelling and should also show evidence of broader knowledge spanning water quality as well as experimental approaches in hydrology. Such a breadth of expertise is needed for effective supervision of postgraduate MSc theses. The candidate should have a strong research profile demonstrated by

  • a record of quality publications in hydrological modelling
  • experience as principled investigator in a multi-disciplinary research setting and
  • success in acquiring external funding from differing funding sources.

Education: The successful candidate should demonstrate a successful record of teaching and student supervision at MSc level in a multi-cultural setting. Experience in adaptation of MSc programmes to changing needs in the water sector as well as evidence of success in acquiring fellowships and other forms of sponsorship is an added advantage.


Capacity Development: The successful candidate should have experience in project formulation and in assisting postgraduate (MSc) students to find their footing in water resources research.   The candidate should demonstrate capability in institutional strengthening and development in developing countries. Highly valued experience will include assisting NULWI to find new research fronts.  

REQUIREMENTS

  • PhD degree in hydrology and/or water resources management/engineering;
  • Research reputation demonstrated through a record of quality publications;
  • Demonstration of a capacity to attract funded research grants;
  • Experience lecturing and supervising MSc level theses;
  • Experience in researching as a team player in a multi-disciplinary setting;
  • Relevant professional experience in developing countries;
  • Excellent command of the English language.

The appointment is for a two-year period renewable on satisfactory performance. However, it can be turned into a permanent and pensionable contract for Lesotho citizens.
