The Department of Biotechnology and Food Technology has been established in the Faculty of Science at the Doornfontein Campus of the University of Johannesburg with effect from January 2014. It is focused on training Biotechnologists and Food Technologists for a wide range of Industries as well as research in the related fields. Apart from presenting lectures in Food Technology to undergraduate and BTech students, the appointee will be expected to actively conduct research, supervise postgraduate students and be involved in the other activities of the Department.

The New Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP) involves recruiting a new cohort of academics. The programme is transformative in nature and, priority is given to designated candidates. Candidates must be 40 years and younger. The programmenables nGAP appointments to benefit from teaching and research development opportunities and requires the incumbent to register for their PhD or post-doctoral studies.

Responsibilities:

In line with the Department of Higher Education and training’s New Generation Academic Programme (nGAP), the Faculty of Science at the University of Johannesburg is seeking to make an appointment of a Lecturer in the Department of Biotechnology and Food Technology. We are seeking an exceptionally motivated, qualified and ambitious aspirant South African academic to contribute to and expand the Faculty’s current teaching and research interests/specialisations.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute meaningfully to the projects of the department, including administrative duties, and teach in undergraduate and postgraduate modules in Food Technology in the Department of Biotechnology and Food Technology.

In particular, the incumbent will be expected to:

  • Register for the PhD degree in in Food Science/Food Technology;
  • Prepare and deliver lectures for undergraduate students;
  • Prepare and conduct practical sessions for the students;
  • Prepare and mark assignments, tests, and exams;
  • Establish their own research niche in the Department and participate in research activities leading to publication of articles in internationally peer-reviewed/accredited journals;
  • Attend departmental and faculty meetings;
  • Drive the Global Excellence and Stature (GES) objectives of the University of Johannesburg;
  • Participate in Community Engagement initiatives in the Department and Faculty.

The duration of the nGAP programme is 6 years. nGAP posts are institutional based and are permanent positions.

Additionally, nGAP lecturers are required to participate on the South African’s Universities’ Development Programme (SSAU-DP)

  • A Master’s degree in Food Science/Food Technology (70% and above);
  • Strong commitment to teaching and research;
  • Ability to perform research, teaching and administration simultaneously;
  • Previous lecturing experience (provide a teaching portfolio with application if available)
  • One or more research articles in peer-reviewed publications
  • Be able to lecture an undergraduate module and teach undergraduate practicals in Food Technology
  • Show interest in becoming an academic and eagerness to participate in changing the South African landscape through education.
  • Experience in Transmission electron microscopy for Biological samples

  • Experience in the integration of ICT in teaching and learning as well as electronic assessment techniques e.g. Blackboard

Recommendations:

  • Experience in teaching/tutoring in a University environment.
  • One or more research articles in peer-reviewed publications.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills to facilitate teaching and learning.
  • Demonstrate ability to work with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to perform research, teaching and administration simultaneously.
