Leader (m/f/d) of the Component “Support South Africa’s vaccine production”

Field of activity

South Africa plans to strengthen local production of vaccines in the short and medium term in line with the African Union’s new Partnership for African Local Vaccine Manufacturing. The stakeholder landscape includes various local and international pharmaceutical companies as well as the Department of Science and Innovation, development banks and agencies, academia, and WHO working towards this goal. In this context, GIZ will implement a new project to support South Africa’s vaccine production ecosystem, from academia and research to the private sector. The project will work closely with the South African regulatory institution SAHPRA and with the newly formed African Medical Agency. The component will be implemented in close coordination other GIZ regional programs collaborating with the African Medicines Agency and the Africa Centre for Disease Control and Prevention.

Your tasks

  • Strategic planning and design of the production component and responsibility for the operational implementation of activities under high time and political pressure
  • Selection of instruments for cooperation with the business community in compliance with GIZ regulations
  • Content and commercial monitoring of collaborations with companies and/or academic institutions in the context of vaccine production
  • Personnel responsibility for national staff in the field of production and academic cooperation and at least one integrated specialist
  • Quality assurance of academic collaborations with institutions from South Africa and/or Germany
  • Support of the contract officer (AV) in editing, writing and presenting technical papers for internal and external information events with other actors of German and international development cooperation
  • Result-oriented cooperation with other team members and/or GIZ colleagues on the topics of regulation, capacity building and market access
  • Support of the AV in the field of monitoring and evaluation, reporting as well as active knowledge management

Your profile

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in biomedical sciences, public health, business or economics, political science or similar field of study
  • Several years of relevant professional experience, preferably gained abroad, in collaboration with industry or in complex projects with consultation of different stakeholders (industry, science, government, international organizations)
  • Initial experience with supply chains of pharmaceuticals and especially vaccines is a strong advantage
  • Experience with staff and budget management is a great advantage
  • High degree of flexibility, excellent self-organization and prioritization skills
  • Ability to learn new tasks proactively, time efficiently and competently in a dynamic environment
  • Strong communication and networking skills with the ability to work in a team
  • Business fluent in German and English
