Land and Community Legal Counsel ( HRL 16 )
Sappi Limited requires a temporary Land and Community Legal Counsel to conduct research and analyse historical data from various sources in order to assist and facilitate the settlement of land claims on Sappi land. Write and review contracts with service providers to the Forestry Division as and when required.
This role reports in to the Senior Legal Advisor.
The main responsibilities of the job are:
- Gather historical data, analyse and interpret it against the claim made, compile findings in a detailed report
- Interface with the relevant land reform regulatory department to reduce bottlenecks in processing of claims to Sappi property
- Interface with internal stakeholders to establish consensus and way forward to resolution of claim and keep the business informed of such changes
- Keep track of changes to land reform policy and regulatory information, case law and policies implemented by the regulatory authorities
- Provide in-house legal advice to Sappi’s Southern Africa Forestry division as and when requested to do so.
- Write and review contracts with service providers to the Forestry Division in terms of the legal services levels of authority,
- Accompany Sappi Forestry Management and/or Forestry Procurement in contract negotiations as and when requested and provide legal advice and warnings of possible bottlenecks, pitfalls, contraventions of land and any other concerns.
The ideal candidate should have:
- LLB + member of Law Society or General Bar Counsel.
- Up to 2 years post admission experience
- Experience in land reform law an advantage
- Some litigation and commercial law experience required
- Ability to translate English to Zulu and vice versa will be an advantage
- Post graduate qualification (preferably in the area of historical research sociology and human settlement disciplines would be advantageous.
- Proficient in MS Office
