POST TITLE : LABORATORY TECHNICIAN – CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT

JOB SUMMARY
Under general supervision of the Head of Programme Construction Management the Laboratory Technician shall perform tests and supervises students when conducting tests for a variety of materials used in the construction field. He/she shall set up experiments and supervise construction technology practical projects. He/she shall be responsible for the efficient management, security & safety and cleanness of the laboratories and workshops.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The key duties of the post are as follows :-
- Supervises students during laboratory (Concrete, Asphalt, etc) and field work (Land Surveying) and enforces adherence to safety precautions.
- Supervises Construction Technology projects.
- Marks laboratory and fieldwork reports and submit marks to concerned lecturers.
- Prepares and keeps inventory of all equipment and materials in the laboratories for security and stock-control purposes.
- Purchase and manage use of laboratory consumables.
- Writes report on obsolete equipment, facilitate repair and Initiate purchase of new laboratory equipment.
- Communicates verbally and in writing with supervisors and coworkers.
- Supervises and demonstrate safe usage of equipment to the students to comply with both statutory and Lerotholi Polytechnic health and safety policies.
- Responsible for the maintenance of a clean and safe workshop environment and to be the designated custodian for assigned laboratory space.
- Secures all laboratory equipment, tools and facilities to safeguard against theft and vandalism.
- Prepares accidents and incidents reports.
- Invigilates tests and examinations.
- Supports work using innovative and sustainable building materials.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
NB* Because of the changing nature of our business your job description will inevitably change. You will, from time to time, be required to undertake other activities of a similar nature that fall within your capabilities as directed by management.
Experience
- Two years working experience in Concrete Laboratory or Construction Site.
Personal attributes
- Self motivated.
- Ability to work with minimum supervision.
- Be able to work with students from different back round.
- Be willing to supervise students for extra – mural activities.
JOB SPECIFICATION
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum requirement is Bachelor’s Degree in Construction Engineering or Civil Engineering.
Certificate in Carpentry and Joinery OR Bricklaying and Plastering OR Health and Safety will be an added advantage.
Knowledge and skills Required:
- Strong background in the following courses:
- Concrete Technology
- Engineering/Land surveying
- Construction Technology
- Computer skills
- Knowledge of tests for other construction material will put the incumbent at an advantage.
- Good communication skills
- Supervisory skills
