The CSIR has a vacancy for Laboratory Assistant in the Future Production: Mining Cluster. The purpose of this role is to assist the test officers in receiving and preparation of test specimens and machine set-up for testing in the mechanical laboratory in order to meet operational targets. Housekeeping tasks and test machine lubrication are primarily the responsibility of the laboratory assistants.This position based in Johannesburg.

Key responsibilities:

  • Receive and off-load test specimens (including completion of the receiving book and specimen labelling) to ensure specimen identification and traceability;
  • Prepare test specimens prior to testing and measure specimen gauge lengths after test completion;
  • Prepare and set-up the test machine following SOPs or test officer directions;
  • Carry out housekeeping tasks in the laboratory, this includes post-test disposal of specimens and clean-up of the test area;
  • Mark test specimens by stamping identification numbers and the laboratory mark on each item;
  • Transport test specimens from one area to the next in the laboratory;
  • Work with the test officer to maximise the throughput of work while adhering to quality and safety standards;
  • Lubricate machines as per maintenance checklists on a daily and weekly basis;
  • Assist during machine repair and maintenance tasks and Ad-hoc tasks as assigned by immediate supervisor or line manager

Qualifications, skills and experience:

  • A grade twelve senior certificate with at least two years’ experience in a testing laboratory or workshop;
  • A driver’s license for light motor vehicle;
  • Fork lift operator license will be an advantage;
  • Crane operator certificate will be an advantage;
  • Handyman skills will be an advantage;
  • Must be proficient in dimensional measurement, including Vernier calliper and micro-meter;
  • Numeracy associated with Grade 10;
  • Candidate must be conversant in english.
