PSI Lesotho seeks a highly skilled and results-driven Lab Technician ×2 to join the team.

About the Department of War (DOW) Project

Department of War (DOW) is a project supporting the Lesotho Defence Force (LDF), the uniform and non-uniform security services of the country as well as their direct beneficiaries.

The project started on a smaller scale in 2005 with the design and implementation of HIV prevention programmes, which focused primarily on training of military personnel in HIV prevention and HIV testing and reinforcing the capacity to increase uptake of HIV counselling and testing services.

Until 2012, when Voluntary Male Circumcision (VMMC) services were launched, which were fully integrated in the services provided at Thomas Wellness Centre in Makoanyane and are sustained by the institution beyond project life.

The project supports the military with lab strengthening activities towards its accreditation.

Under DOW Project, the incumbent will complement the military laboratory team to achieve the Lab Accreditation. Under the technical supervision of the Laboratory Supervisor and general supervision of the Senior HIV Mentor, the Laboratory Technician will be responsible for implementation of safety precautions, avail the appropriate SOPs and implementation of quality systems according to SLIPTA and SLMTA. Monitor the laboratory stock levels using DISA, analysis of samples as per protocols and SOPs, reporting of results, compilation and maintenance of laboratory records, training of students during the in-service and conducts site supervision. The incumbent will also serve as Quality Assurance Officer for point of care HIV testing at the military facility, initiating the EQC and PPT by all the HTS counsellors according to the national guidelines.

What You’ll Do

The incumbent must be able to perform all the following duties and responsibilities:

  • Sample Management:
    • Collect, receive, label, prepare, and store biological, chemical, or physical samples safely.
  • Testing and Analysis:
    • Run controlled experiments, operate automated laboratory machines, and analyse samples following the guidelines.
  • Equipment Care:
    • Clean, sterilize, calibrate and troubleshoot laboratory instruments to make sure that they work appropriately.
  • Laboratory Maintenance:
    • Order supplies stock inventory and manage them well using appropriate system.
    • Adhere to laboratory safety measures.
  • Implementation of quality systems:
    • Daily ensures implementation of Quality Control in the laboratory for all tests.
    • Ensures active participation in External Quality Assessment schemes.
    • Continuously investigates poor performance, intensifies root causes and implement corrective actions and follow ups.
    • Monthly compilation of Laboratory data.
    • Quarterly conducts internal audits, identifies quarterly gaps and implement process improvement at the facility.
  • Record Keeping:
    • Dispatches patients’/client results daily.
    • Ensures that all records are updated and maintained by staff monthly.
    • Compiles monthly statistics and Laboratory Management Information System (LMIS) in the Laboratory.
    • Consolidates monthly records and submit to Laboratory supervisor.
  • Training and support:
    • Continuously provides onsite training to Lab students on all activities.
    • Supervises and supports Point of Care Testing Sites (POC) using standardized checklist.
    • Monthly monitors quality of results using quality assurance programme using Proficiency panel testing (PPT) and external Quality Control (EQC) at POCT.

What You’ll Bring

  • Diploma in Biomedical Sciences.
  • 5 years working as Laboratory Technologist.
  • Ability to work with Diverse Communities.
  • Good presentation skills.
  • Competency in Quality Management System (QMS).
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Good reporting skills both verbally and written.
