POST TITLE: LABORATORY TECHNICIAN-CIVIL ENGINEERING

DIVISION/DEPARTMENT: ACADEMIC – SCHOOL OF THE BUILT-ENVIRONMENT

REPORTS TO: HEAD OF PROGRAMME GRADE

JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision of the Head of Programme, the Laboratory Technician will be expected to initiate purchase and manage use of laboratory equipment and consumables. Supervise field work and laboratory sessions. Ensure Health and Safety compliance in the laboratories and fieldwork.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The key duties of the post are as follows :-

  1. Supervises students during laboratory and field work, and enforces adherence to safety precautions.
  2. Marks laboratory and fieldwork reports and submits marks to concerned lecturers.
  3. Prepares and keeps inventory of all equipment and materials in the laboratories for security and stock-control purposes.
  4. Purchases and manages use of laboratory consumables.
  5. Reports on obsolete equipment, facilitates repair and initiates purchase of new laboratory equipment.
  6. Communicates verbally and in writing with supervisors and coworkers.
  7. Supervises and demonstrates safe usage of equipment to the students to comply with both statutory and Lerotholi Polytechnic health and safety policies.
  8. Maintains a clean and safe workshop environment and is the designated custodian for assigned laboratory space.
  9. Secures all laboratory equipment, tools and facilities to safeguard against theft and vandalism.
  10. Prepares accidents and incidents report.
  11.  Invigilates tests and examinations.
  12. Supports work using innovative and sustainable building materials.
  13. Performs any other duties as assigned.

NB* Because of the changing nature of our business your job description will inevitably change. You will, from time to time, be required to undertake other activities of a similar nature that fall within your capabilities as directed by management.

Experience

  • Two years professional working experience in Civil Engineering Surveying, Laboratory works and Construction Site.

 Personal attributes

  • Self-motivated.
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision.
  • Be able to work with students from different backgrounds.
  • Be willing to supervise students for extra – mural activities.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering.

Knowledge and skills Required:

  • Strong background in the following courses:
    • Material Testing
    • Engineering / Land  Surveying
  • Computer Skills
  • Good Communication skills
  • Supervisory skills
