POST TITLE: LABORATORY TECHNICIAN-CIVIL ENGINEERING
DIVISION/DEPARTMENT: ACADEMIC – SCHOOL OF THE BUILT-ENVIRONMENT
REPORTS TO: HEAD OF PROGRAMME
JOB SUMMARY
Under general supervision of the Head of Programme, the Laboratory Technician shall supervise students while conducting a variety of Civil Engineering tests, field work and be responsible for the efficient management, security & safety and cleanliness of the equipment, laboratories and workshops.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The key duties of the post are as follows :-
- Supervise students during laboratory and field work, and enforces adherence to safety precautions.
- Prepares equipment or materials needed for engineering surveying and laboratory practicals in advance.
- Marks laboratory and fieldwork reports and submits marks to concerned lecturers.
- Prepares and keeps inventory of all equipment and materials in the laboratories for security and stock-control purposes.
- Purchases and manages use of laboratory consumables.
- Reports on obsolete equipment, facilitates repair and initiates purchase of new laboratory equipment.
- Supervises and demonstrates safe usage of equipment to the students to comply with both statutory and Lerotholi Polytechnic health and safety policies.
- Maintains a clean and safe workshop environment and is the designated custodian for assigned laboratory space.
- Secures all laboratory equipment, tools and facilities to safeguard against theft and vandalism.
- Prepares accidents and incidents report.
- Invigilates tests and examinations.
- Supports work using innovative and sustainable building materials.
- Performs any other duties as assigned.
NB* Because of the changing nature of our business your job description will inevitably change. You will, from time to time, be required to undertake other activities of a similar nature that fall within your capabilities as directed by management.
Experience
- Two years professional working experience in Civil Engineering Surveying, Laboratory works and Construction Site.
Personal attributes
- Self-motivated.
- Ability to work with minimum supervision.
- Be able to work with students from different backgrounds.
- Be willing to supervise students for extra – mural activities.

QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering.
Knowledge and skills Required:
- Strong background in the following courses:
- Material Testing
- Engineering / Land Surveying
- Computer Skills
- Good Verbal and written Communication skills
- Supervisory skills
