POST TITLE: Laboratory Technician – Architecture

JOB SUMMARY
Under the general supervision of the Head of Programme – Architecture, the Laboratory Technician provides technical and instructional support to students and staff within the Architecture programme. The incumbent is responsible for teaching and supervising students during computer laboratory, workshop sessions and conduct industry visits. In addition, the technician contributes to curriculum development, assessments of lab work, and the overall enhancement of the academic programme.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The key duties of the post are as follows:
- Maintain architecture studios, workshops, and laboratories in safe and functional condition.
- Ensure all equipment, tools, and materials are properly maintained, calibrated, and stored.
- Implement and enforce laboratory safety regulations, including use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Monitor and manage inventory of consumables and materials for model-making, drafting, and construction technology labs.
- Provide technical assistance to students and academic staff during studio sessions, practical classes, and design projects.
- Prepare laboratory setups, models, and demonstration materials for instructional use.
- Train students on proper use of laboratory equipment, machines (e.g., laser cutters, 3D printers, plotters, and hand tools), and digital fabrication technologies.
- Operate and maintain digital fabrication equipment including 3D printers, CNC machines, and laser cutters.
- Assist in preparing digital files for printing and fabrication.
- Ensure compliance with operational procedures for safe and efficient use of digital tools.
- Provide technical input and assistance in departmental research and prototype development.
- Support staff and students in building physical and digital models for research, exhibitions, and competitions.
- Conduct routine safety inspections and risk assessments in the laboratory and workshop areas.
- Ensure that all users receive proper induction and safety training before accessing facilities.
- Keep records of equipment usage, maintenance logs, and material consumption.
- Assist in procurement and specification of new laboratory equipment and materials.
- Participate in departmental meetings and contribute to continuous improvement of technical operations.
- Guide students in practical model-making, construction detailing, and experimental design methods.
- Promote best practices in craftsmanship, precision, and sustainability in material use.
- Participate in community engagement activities.
JOB SPECIFICATION
Degree in Industrial Design/ Product Design/ Architecture/ Fine Arts with specialization in 3D Design or Sculpture/ Engineering Design and Fabrication or equivalent plus 2 years’ work experience.
EXPERIENCE AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- At least two (2) years working experience in an architectural workshop, model making studio, fabrication techniques, materials technology, construction technology lab and operation of workshop machinery within architecture or design-related environments.
Additionally, the incumbent should:
- Have experience in the use of Laser cutting machines, 3D printing and CNC Machines.
- Be competent in the use of Adobe Suite, Corel Draw, Graphic Soft and Autodesk products, and any other design related applications.
- Be able to guide and instruct students.
- Knowledge of rendering software such as Lumion or V-Ray or any other rendering engine will be an added advantage.
Skills and Attributes:
- Self-motivated.
- Ability to work with minimum supervision.
- Be able to work with students from different background.
- Be willing to supervise students for extra – mural activities.
