Junior Researcher in Budget Policy

The IEJ is a progressive economics think tank based in Johannesburg South Africa. The IEJ’s core objective is to provide policy makers and progressive social forces in South Africa with access to rigorous economic analysis, and well thought through policy options, as a basis for advancing systemic change. Interventions proposed by the IEJ must advance social justice, promote equitable economic development that realises socio-economic rights, and ensure a thriving, democratic, environmentally sustainable, and inclusive economy that places the needs of the majority at the centre.

The budget and tax justice project was launched in 2018 in the context of the need for a more developmentally and rights-based macroeconomic policy framework that takes into account the intersectional ways in which economic injustice is reproduced. Our expenditure work focuses on a campaign against budget cuts (austerity). The tax justice component focuses on how to achieve an equitable domestic tax structure that advances redistribution and raises sufficient resources to allow for the realisation of socio-economic rights.

In the last couple of years, the IEJ has contributed towards parliamentary submissions to the Select and Standing Committees on Finance and Appropriations within the Budget Justice Coalition. In addition, we have also produced two Working Papers, a number of fact sheets, various videos and made a range of contributions to the public debate. We continue to put forward recommendations for anti-austerity policies, state capture and the budget process. Our outputs for this project can be found on: https://iej.org.za/projects/budget-and-tax-justice/
