The Faculty of Health Sciences invites applications for the post of Junior Research Fellow at the Gender Health and Justice Research Unit (GHJRU) on a 3-year temporary contract basis. The GHJRU is an interdisciplinary research Unit based in the Faculty of Health Sciences. It unites scholars, civil society organisations and practitioners in the development and implementation of innovative, interdisciplinary research and interventions on social exclusion and violence in a range of social, political and institutional settings. We focus on the legal and health care rights of vulnerable groups, with a specific focus on women, children, LGBTI persons, as well as those who have lost their liberty as a result of detention or institutionalisation. The core of our work is to improve substantive rights to equality and access to social justice, which includes health and social development, in South Africa and throughout the African continent.

Requirements:
A PhD in Criminal Justice / Humanities / Social Sciences, with a proven interest in gender equality and access to public health care, social development and criminal justice systems.
Minimum 2 years’ experience post doctorate.
3 years’ demonstrable experience in a research environment, including fieldwork, data entry and analysis and report writing; this may include postgraduate studies research experience.
3 years’ demonstrable experience in managing qualitative and quantitative data collection, data quality, and fieldworkers across multiple sites; this may include postgraduate studies research experience.
Hands-on experience with community-based research and/or community-level interventions.
Experience in teaching and training at university, practitioner development, or community levels.
Ability to produce high-quality research outputs for different audiences.
Experience with intersectional and interdisciplinary research.
The ability to work both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary research team.
Ability to analyse research findings through Computer Assisted Data Analysis tools (i.e. SPSS, NVivo, Statistica, etc.)
Added advantages includes:
Substantive knowledge in some of the following areas: gender-based violence, sexual and reproductive rights, social exclusion, violence prevention, public health, and formal and informal justice-seeking processes.
Strong theoretical background on human rights and social justice.
Responsibilities:
Carrying out and leading a research project linked to the Unit’s core interdisciplinary research focus.
Producing at least one research report or publication per annum, linked to the core research project.
Writing and submitting a research grant in the second year of appointment.
Contributing to data collection from fieldwork sites, organising data, data analysis, and contribution to the drafting of descriptive findings for other selected projects being executed by the Unit.
Fieldwork, conducting interviews, capacity-building at community level, and with other civil and state stakeholders, across South Africa.
Drafting and submitting necessary ethics applications to the Faculty’s Ethics Committee for projects being executed by the Unit.
The annual remuneration package this 3-year fixed-term contract position, including benefits, is between R470 033 and R651 323.
