This position is for a duration of 6 months.


Purpose of the Position

The Junior Geotechnical Engineer will support slope stability and ground control at Storm Mountain Diamonds, Kao Mine. The role focuses on pit inspections, rockfall hazard identification, geotechnical monitoring, and supporting safe mining.

This is a development role providing practical field experience and mentorship towards becoming a Geotechnical Engineer.


Educational Qualifications & Related Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mining Engineering, Engineering Geology, or Geotechnical Engineering.
  • 1–3 years’ experience in mining or geotechnical engineering.

Key Performance Areas

  • Conduct daily inspections of pit slopes, highwalls, benches, and catch berms.
  • Identify and report rockfall hazards and unstable ground conditions.
  • Assist with structural mapping and rock mass classification.
  • Support implementation of the Ground Control Management Plan (GCMP).
  • Monitor scaling, rock barring, and other ground control activities.
  • Assist with geotechnical monitoring systems and instrumentation.
  • Support Trigger Action Response Plans (TARPs) for slope movement.
  • Provide geotechnical input into drill and blast practices to protect pit walls.
  • Participate in investigations of rockfalls or slope instability incidents.
  • Prepare geotechnical inspection and monitoring reports.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Basic understanding of rock mechanics and slope stability principles.
  • Knowledge of open-pit mining operations is advantageous.
  • Strong field observation, safety awareness, and reporting skills.
