Overview / Responsibilities:[
Wood is currently recruiting a Junior Contracts Engineers based in our Midrand and Sasolburg offices on a contract basis.

Key responsibilities:


Pre Contract (Tender stage)

  • Become familiar with the project organization, schedule and overall work scope.
  • Participate in the determination of the overall project contracting strategy, the pre-qualification and survey of companies wishing to tender including coordinating the input from other disciplines as appropriate and prepare list of tenderers for management and client approval.
  • Prepare a contracting schedule, keeping in mind the project timeline and input needed from other disciplines for submitting documents, comments, review and compare received tenders and all other required actions identified in the Corporate Contract Execution Procedures and Project Specific procedures
  • Review contract requisitions and scope of work definition with engineering disciplines ensuring that technical specifications and work scope definition are satisfactory in content and format for tender purposes.
  • Review previous lessons learnt to ensure that all possible changes is incorporated and known of.
  • Prepare tender documents and co-ordinate planning and quantity surveying inputs.
  • Submit tender document to client and relevant disciplines for approval before tender is issued to market.
  • Assist if required in the preparation of Bills of Quantities and other pricing schedules using available drawings, MTO’s, model, estimate and all other available data in conjunction with appropriate engineering disciplines.
  • Make recommendations for inclusion of provisional sums and / or development / contingency allowances based upon a careful examination of the likely scope of work to be constructed.
  • Reconciliation of tenders received against original estimate.
  • Participate in pre-tender and / or tender evaluation meetings. Assist in the checking and analysis of tenderers rates and prices including sensitivity / risk analysis. Provide comprehensive commercial evaluation of tenders reviewed for inclusion in tender report.
  • Distribute relevant parts of tenders and expedite comments from other disciplines. Co-ordinate the commercial and technical evaluation of tenders and prepare tender report and bid summary form for management approval.
  • Update Bills of Quantities for contract award and as approved for construction drawings are issued.
  • Assist in the distribution of quantity surveying documentation, data and records according to existing procedures and transfer copies to field as appropriate.
  • Prepare official contract documents and arrange for execution. Distribute conformed copies and ensure that the field have copies of all executed documents and all other required information.


Contract award / manage

  • Advise Cost Engineer and Project Manager of order award value and of any changes affecting construction contract man-hour requirements.
  • Inform doc control of placement of contract.
  • Monitor any changes to the value of the work in each allocated construction contract arising from drawings issued, revisions, site instructions, field variation orders or other causes and progressively monitor the following:
  • Updated Bills of Quantities for measured works
  • Omissions / additions to the Bills of Quantities
  • Preparation of star rates
  • Use of dayworks
  • Prepare cost estimates for field instructions and extra work authorizations and ensure that they are properly categorized including the preparation of valuations for field variation orders.
  • Ensure that all contractors receive all necessary specifications, drawings and documents including all site safety, labour and discipline literature to enable contractor to meet his contractual obligations.
  • Use all resources and remedies available under the contract in order to ensure that the contractor meets his contractual obligations.
  • Monitor and in collaboration with other appropriate site disciplines, record the productivity of each assigned construction contractor together with explanations for any deviations from the performance anticipated from the contractors tender.
  • Review, analyze and process monthly interim progress certificates in accordance with the requirements of the contract.
  • Prepare notices and other correspondence for signature by the Site Manager in accordance with the requirements of the contracts as applicable.
  • Attend all regular site meetings with contractors and prepare notes of meeting when required.
  • Ensure that contractor report progress against each sectional access and completion date as stated in the contract.
  • Review, adjudicate and analyze claims and back charges and expedite settlement when so required.
  • Let any locally awarded contracts in accordance with corporate and project procedures.
  • Prepare and execute amendments to contracts as necessary.
  • Ensure that contractors bonds and insurances are in force.
  • Prepare monthly and other commercial reports when so required.
  • If required maintain site construction records relative to field master filing, including construction release drawing issues to contractors and general field office administration.
  • Obtain information from different supervisors and prepare contractor performance evaluations in a timely manner.
  • Ensure that proper documentation is kept to facilitate technical or financial audit and the safe return of records to archives following job completion. Assist auditors as and when required.


Post Contract

  • Initiate the appropriate completion certificates in a timely manner.
  • Prepare the final account for each allocated contract and provide feedback to Home Office in a structured and auditable way identifying all components of the agreed final account.
