The CSIR has two vacancies for Junior Analysts in the Marine Laboratory, within the Coastal Systems research group in the Smart Places cluster. The incumbents will be responsible to carry out routine analysis in an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory, through efficient and effective production and reporting of results. These positions are based in Stellenbosch, Cape Town.

Key responsibilities:

  • Conduct routine analyses for simple and complex methods and instruments in the laboratory;
  • Set up, operate and verify performance of instrumentation, e.g. Inductively Couple Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP OES), Inductively Couple Plasma Mass Spectroscopy (ICP MS), Flow Injection Analyser (FIA), Direct Mercury Analyser (DMA); Elemental Analyser, etc;
  • Prepare samples for analyses;
  • Perform basic scheduled instrument maintenance;
  • Display competence in at least 70% of all routine methods;
  • Maintain adequate stock levels of consumables required for routine analysis;
  • Verify results against accepted quality and performance criteria, e.g. QC control charts, reference materials, duplicates, etc.


Qualifications, skills and experience:

  • A National diploma or Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, analytical chemistry, biochemistry or related fields with at least two years’ experience in laboratory analyses in an ISO 17025 accredited environmental testing laboratory;
  • Experience in Flow Injection Analyser (FIA) and Carbon and Nitrogen Elemental Analyser (TOC/N) analyses will be advantageous;
  • Proven competence in Inductively Couple Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP OES), Inductively Couple Plasma Mass Spectroscopy (ICP MS) and colorimetric methods;
  • Ability to interpret analytical data for integrity and against known quality criteria;
  • Knowledge of analytical chemistry as it relates to the business of the laboratory;
  • Computer literacy and competency in MS Office;
  • Good written and verbal communication skills;
  • Attention to detail and the ability to work accurate and well under pressure;
  • Valid Driver’s Licence
