Opportunity

This is a unique opportunity for a skilled and motivated Junior Analyst to join a young, growing climate non-profit.

In this role, you will work with the Data and Analysis team across a number of projects, with a specific focus on the SteelWatch Corporate Scorecard and Steelmaker Transformation Tracker. You will join an international team across multiple countries that is nimble, collaborative, and highly ambitious in influencing the steel sector, which drives 7% of annual greenhouse gas emissions.

SteelWatch is an international non-profit civil society organisation established in June 2023, focused on driving corporate accountability in the steel sector and urgent climate action.

Our vision is a steel sector that underpins a thriving zero-emissions economy.

We run corporate campaigns and challenge the global steel industry to replace complacency with urgent action in line with science-based pathways. SteelWatch has established a strong presence among civil society and industry stakeholders and is increasingly recognised as an authoritative voice on steel decarbonisation.

About the Role

The Junior Analyst is responsible for analysing the steel sector and decarbonisation trends, as well as gathering and maintaining data across the organisation.

The role supports the Data and Analysis team and works closely with campaign and communications colleagues to ensure reliable data informs campaigns and narratives. Approximately half of the work will focus on the Corporate Scorecard and Steelmaker Transformation Tracker projects.

The Junior Analyst reports to the SteelWatch Steel Analyst.

Key Responsibilities

Tracker and Scorecard Projects (50%)

  • Collect and interpret data on steelmakers internationally
  • Manage datasets and data systems underpinning the Tracker and Scorecard
  • Analyse data to derive findings and insights
  • Provide data and analysis support during production, launch, and dissemination phases

Other Project Data Work (50%)

  • Analyse steel and emissions data across multiple projects
  • Monitor and analyse datasets in collaboration with partners (e.g., Global Iron and Steel Tracker, Agora Transition Tracker, IEA updates)
  • Provide research and data support for corporate campaigns

Data and Industry Intelligence

  • Provide insights on steel industry trends and developments
  • Analyse corporate reports and announcements
  • Distinguish between genuine decarbonisation efforts and misleading claims
  • Maintain internal data systems to ensure accessibility and accuracy
  • Provide ad hoc support as required

Team Collaboration

  • Work closely with the Data and Analysis team, including regional analysts
  • Collaborate with campaign, communications, and fundraising teams
  • Contribute to team culture, collaboration, and remote working practices

Person Specification

The ideal candidate will have technical knowledge of iron and steel production technologies and decarbonisation pathways, with a strong analytical approach.

They should be detail-oriented, adaptable, and comfortable working in a dynamic start-up environment.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • BSc in Engineering or a similar technical field
  • 1–2 years’ experience in relevant fields (engineering, energy systems, environmental economics, decarbonisation, or industrial analysis)
  • Experience working with data related to steel sector decarbonisation
  • Strong analytical and quantitative data skills
  • Ability to work with greenhouse gas emissions data
  • Strong attention to detail and data accuracy
  • Ability to compare methodologies and assess comparability
  • Ability to present data clearly using graphs and presentations
  • Ability to track industry trends and analyse multiple data sources
  • Awareness (or willingness to learn) about regional differences in steel production
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and adapt to changing priorities
  • Strong English communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Willingness to work across time zones

Desirable

  • Experience in the non-profit sector
  • Knowledge of greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting
  • Understanding of company reporting methodologies
  • Experience in fast-paced, start-up environments
  • Proficiency in collaboration tools (Google Workspace, Slack, Zoom)
  • Python proficiency is an advantage
  • Knowledge of additional languages (Mandarin, Japanese, or Korean is an advantage)
  • Strong initiative and willingness to learn
  • Motivation to contribute to climate action

Additional Information

Location and Remote Working

  • Fully remote role with some in-person meetings
  • Open to candidates in the EU, Middle East, or Africa (UTC -2 to UTC +4)

Work Environment

  • Remote work using tools such as Slack, Zoom, and Google Drive
  • Flexible working hours, with some early mornings required
  • Occasional travel may be required

Terms

  • Initial contract of up to 12 months, with potential renewal
  • Full-time role (40 hours per week)
  • Contract type dependent on location

Salary

  • Netherlands-based salary range: €31,963 – €47,000 (pro rata)
  • Salaries in other locations based on local market rates
