Applications are invited from suitably qualified local candidates for the following vacant position tenable at the Southern Division of the High Court in Mohale’s Hoek:
JOB TITLE: Judge’s Clerk
GRADE: G
NUMBER OF POSITIONS: Four (4)
RESPONSIBLE TO: Deputy Registrar
Job Summary
Under the general supervision of the Deputy Registrar, the incumbent is responsible for managing the Judge’s work schedule and conducting legal research to support the preparation of judgments.
Main Duties
1. Conduct Legal Research
1.1 Assists the Judge in analyzing and determining issues in cases.
1.2 Discusses identified issues with the Judge.
1.3 Conducts detailed research on specific legal topics.
1.4 Presents researched materials on relevant case law and legislation (local and international).
1.5 Monitors and reports on new developments in law and jurisprudence.
2. Prepare the Judge’s Daily Workload
2.1 Manages the Judge’s diary for judgment delivery.
2.2 Performs citation checks on draft judgments.
2.3 Convenes court and attends trials to note and follow up on orders.
2.4 Secures exhibits for transmission to the Registrar.
2.5 Communicates judgment delivery dates to the Registrar.
2.6 Coordinates with the Registrar for Judge’s meetings (e.g., pre-trial meetings with lawyers).
3. Liaise with the Registrar on Court Matters
3.1 Records all postponements for fresh cases, part-heard cases, and reserved judgments.
3.2 Records and assesses support staff performance in court.
3.3 Tracks the stage of proceedings in court.
3.4 Performs other court-related duties to improve efficiency.
3.5 Coordinates with the Roll Office on postponements and new hearing dates.
4. Keep Stock of Files in Chambers and Their Status
4.1 Criminal Trials
4.2 Criminal Applications
4.3 Criminal Reviews
4.4 Civil Trials
4.5 Civil Applications
4.6 Civil Reviews
4.7 Appeal Cases
5. Safekeeping of Records / Court-Related Duties
5.1 Manages movement and security of files in and out of chambers.
5.2 Transfers completed cases to the Registrar for safekeeping.
5.3 Ensures file security in chambers.
5.4 Files and indexes all delivered judgments.
6. Preparation of Monthly Returns
Compiles reports on all judgments delivered.

Working Conditions
Unfavorable Conditions:
May be required to work beyond normal hours, including holidays and weekends due to research demands.
