JOB TITLE : JUDGES CLERK

GRADE: G
NUMBER OF POSITIONS : 2

RESPONSIBLE TO : DEPUTY REGISTRAR

JOB SUMMARY:

Under the general supervision of the Deputy Registrar, the incumbent is responsible for managing work schedule for the Judge and conducting research for Judges to prepare judgments.

MAIN DUTIES:

  1. Conduct Legal Research
    1.1 Assist the Judge in analyzing and determining issues involved in cases heard.
    1.2 Discuss issues so determined with the Judge.
    1.3 Carry out detailed research on particular topics.
    1.4 Present the researched materials on all decided cases and legislations both local and international to the judge.
    1_5 Monitor and bring to the attention of the judiciary new developments in law and jurisprudence.
  2. Prepares the Judges’ daily workload

2.1 Manage the Judge’s diary in relation to delivery of judgements.
2.2 Cite checking draft judgements before delivery.
2.3 Convene the court, and sit in Court for the duration of every trial to note and follow up any orders.
2.4 Secure for transmission to the Registrar any exhibits handed in during trial.
2.5 Communicates dates of delivery of judgments to Registrar.

2.6 Liaise with the Registrar to prepare for the Judges’ request of the
meetings. For example, pre-trial meetings with lawyers.

  1. Liaise with the Registrar on Court matters.

Record all postponements made in court in relation to:

3.1 Fresh Cases

3.2 Part- heard cases

3.3 Reserved judgments

3.4 Record and assess all support staff in court

3.5 Record stage of proceedings in Court

3.6 Performing any other court related work requested to improve the efficiency of the court.

3.7 Liaise with the Roll Office regarding postponements and new hearing dates.

4.7 Appeal Cases

  1. Safekeeping of Records / performing any court related work requested to improve the efficiency of the court.

5.1 Ensures proper movement and management of files in and out of the Judge’s Chambers
5.2 Takes all complete cases to the Registrar for safe — keeping in the Registries.
5.3 Ensures overall file security in chambers.
5.4 Ensures proper filing and indexing of all delivered judgment in Judges’ Chambers.

  1. Preparation of monthly returns

Compilation of all Judgments delivered and reports.

7.1 For property (Materials, Resources and Equipment) Subject to the supervision of his/her immediate supervisor, the Incumbent accounts for materials and equipment placed at his/her disposal.

Subject to the direction of the Judge and the Registrar, the incumbent will decide on law applicable to each case.

The incumbent shall collect materials and analyse the material to come up with appropriate information for judgement in question.

(c) Dexterity
The incumbents’ task involves good listening, writing and research and analytical skills.

WORKING CONDITIONS

(a) Unfavorable Conditions:
At times the nature of research will subject the incumbent to unfavorable condition, which will include working beyond normal working hours, on holidays or even over the weekends.

(b) Hazards:
The incumbent shall sometimes be exposed to risk of attack by litigant or relatives of accused persons.
