International Organization for Migration seeks to appoint Laboratory Technician Pretoria, South Africa.
Remuneration: G5 (UN Salary Scale for General Staff)
Employment Type: Fixed Term Contract, with the possibility of extension
Start Date: As soon as possible
Under the overall supervision of the Migration Health Officer and the technical supervision of the Regional Laboratory Coordinator Laboratory, the incumbent will perform laboratory procedures as part of the Health Assessment routine protocols. Ensure that identified migrants have laboratory tests associated with the health assessments. These are conducted in accordance with international standards are medically fit to migrate in accordance with requirements of the resettlement countries.
Responsibilities
- Ensure strict adherence to fraud prevention measures in all aspects of work performed for refugees/migrants
- Ensure strict adherence to bio-safety measures during specimen collection, laboratory procedures, disposing of, storing and shipping of specimens
- Collect/gather specimens for medical screening or treatment follow-up of migrants
- Follow internationally accepted laboratory procedures when processing specimens for HIV, Hepatitis, Syphilis, Tuberculosis, urine and stool examinations
- Ensure and maintain high quality of performed laboratory tests
- Keep laboratory records and data for all testing conducted and for all outsourced
- Encode, update, and maintain electronic laboratory records
- Preparation and submit laboratory examination reports on a timely basis
- Prepare and submit of stock orders in time, keep stock records and monitor consumption
- Assist in managing specimens and laboratory materials shipment
- Implement and comply with the Internal Quality Assurance System in the laboratory for tests performed
- Collect DNA specimens as required
- Prepare and update of standard operating procedures
- Perform such other duties as may be assigned
Required:
- Education:
- Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology, with valid license to work as Laboratory Technician in South Africa.
- Laboratory technician must be legally able to release medical laboratory results.
- Experience:
- Minimum 3 years relevant working experience in busy laboratory/medical institutions, International Organizations or NGOs dealing with refugees.
- Phlebotomy experience required, and should be conversant in biological specimen collection, storing and packaging and transporting.
- Experience in TB culture laboratory an advantage.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain accuracy and confidentiality in performing responsibilities.
- Proficient in Microsoft Windows and Office
- Languages:
- Thorough knowledge of English
