Instrument Mechanician ( HRL 13 )

PURPOSE OF THE JOB

The incumbent in this position will install, maintain and repair instrumentation ensuring optimum plant availability by providing efficient services with specific responsibility for identifying repair and/or replacement needs; according to engineering specifications and safety standards.

REPORTING TO : INSTRUMENT FOREMAN

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Installs, commissions, modifies and maintains instrument installations and DCS equipment by the application of engineering expertise and skills to meet Engineering and Production standards.
  • Fault finding and support on DCS,PLC,PROFIBUS NETWORKS and on field instrumentation and process control loops.
  • Fault finding and replacing of I/O electronic cards.
  • Fault find, repair and configure computers.
  • Loop Tuning for optimum plant operation and fault finding on DCS by the application of engineering skills and process plant controls.
  • Removes,defective instruments from system, decontaminates, disassembles, and cleans instruments, and repair/replaces defective parts, using hand tools.
  • Perform and record calibration of instruments as per ISO system to ensure safety and accuracy of instruments. Ensures test equipment is well maintained.
  • Update and record using SAP calibrations made, parts and components used, and inventory of parts on hand.
  • Prepares schematic drawings, sketches, and reports to reflect changes or alterations made in instruments, circuits, and systems.
  • Assist in installation & commissioning of all new projects from field to DCS.
  • Carries out limited fitting, rigging & welding.
  • Overhauls rotable equipment prior to returning to stores.
  • Assists in the training of Apprentices and Aides.
  • Required to work standby and overtime as required.
  • Adheres to environmental policy & procedures and ensures safety & environmental compliance.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE

  • Grade 12/Matric qualification and N2 Instrumentation (N3 Advantageous)
  • Instrumentation Trade Test Certificate
  • Two years post apprenticeship experience in an Instrument Mechanician in a heavy Engineering environment will be preferred.
  • Pulp and Paper experience will be advantageous.
  • Driver’s License and Own Transport essential
  • ABB DCS knowledge would be advantageous
  • SAP knowledge will be advantageous
