InfoNile is calling for applications for training, workshop and mentorship on investigating threats to freshwater biodiversity in the Lake Victoria basin. Teams of three (2 reporters and 1 editor) from Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania,and Uganda are invited to apply for this 4-day workshop in Uganda from 18th-23rd October 2021.
This workshop is organized by InfoNile. InfoNile is a cross-border group of geo journalists with a mission to uncover critical stories on water issues in the Nile River Basin through data-based multimedia storytelling. InfoNile is a project of Water Journalists Africa, the largest network of journalists reporting on water in the African continent.
The workshop has partnered with the African Institute for Investigative Journalism (AIIJ), a media organization focused on training and capacity building; collaborative reporting; research, and grants for investigative journalism.
Mentors from Code for Africa and SciDev.Net will provide insights on data journalism
Several matters have been said to threaten biodiversity in the Lake Victoria Basin. A report by IUCN acknowledges the Lake Victoria Basin as an internationally recognized region for its high levels of freshwater species diversity and endemism. It further points out that the freshwater ecosystems in the region are highly threatened. This also threatens local livelihoods, national and regional economies as they depend on the unique and diverse nature of freshwater species within the basin.
This workshop will be focusing on how the media investigations on threats to freshwater biodiversity within the region can be streamlined using data and investigative journalism techniques.
THE WORKSHOP
Teams composed of an editor and two reporters will be supported to participate in a training workshop from 18th-23rd October 2021 in Uganda. (3 days in Entebbe and a field trip to Jinja).
The 4-day workshop will feature presentations, discussions, and group activities on;- Understanding how the media is currently covering water issues in the Lake Victoria Basin; Data and Geo Journalism, Science Journalism, Investigative Journalism, and Story Pitching.
At the end of the workshop, the teams will be expected to have acquired skills in investigative water journalism and story pitching. They will then submit a story pitch to the InfoNile Team under the theme: Investigating threats to freshwater biodiversity in the Lake Victoria basin for possible funding and mentorship.
Successful journalists will receive
- Transport to Uganda and back to your home country.
- Accommodation including meals for the duration of the workshop
- Outstanding story pitches will receive grants and mentorship to produce their stories.
