Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Senior Metrology Officer, the Industrial Metrology Officer is responsible for implementing calibration activities, interpreting and analyzing measurement data, ensuring laboratory health, safety, and environmental compliance, and managing administrative tasks in line with regional and international metrology standards. The role also includes supervising staff within the metrology section.


Key Responsibilities

1. Calibration Activities

  • Apply procedures based on SADCAS technical requirements
  • Conduct calibration exercises to ensure accuracy and suitability
  • Analyze and interpret calibration data
  • Report results and recommend corrective actions

2. Benchmarking and Inter-Laboratory Comparisons

  • Collect standard weights (artifacts) from participating countries
  • Conduct calibration exercises to meet regional standards
  • Analyze and interpret data to draw conclusions
  • Report on calibration measurements and results

3. Laboratory Administration

  • Maintain inventory of laboratory equipment and supplies
  • Ensure health, safety, and environmental compliance
  • Oversee laboratory management system performance
  • Prepare briefs on laboratory performance
  • Attend departmental meetings

4. Staff Supervision and Management

  • Coordinate development of individual work plans
  • Monitor implementation of work plans
  • Ensure timely completion of performance appraisals
  • Develop and manage sectional budgets
  • Prepare training plans
  • Manage disciplinary processes

Job Specifications

Minimum Qualifications (any one of the following):

  • Master’s Degree in Natural and Applied Sciences + knowledge in standards/metrology + 2 years relevant experience
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Natural and Applied Sciences + formal training + 3 years relevant experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Natural and Applied Sciences + formal training + 4 years relevant experience
