1. Background

The Lesotho National League of the Visually Impaired Persons (LNLVIP) is a non-governmental organization committed to advancing the rights and well-being of visually impaired persons in Lesotho. LNLVIP works to ensure equal access to education, employment, and full participation in society for persons with visual impairments.

In line with its commitment to inclusive education, LNLVIP seeks to engage a qualified and experienced Inclusive Education Teacher to strengthen the educational inclusivity of visually impaired learners throughout Lesotho.


2. Job Summary

The Inclusive Education Teacher will provide specialized instruction, guidance, and training to visually impaired learners, their families, educators, and stakeholders. The role will be central in promoting inclusive education practices and policies within Lesotho’s education system, with a specific focus on learners with visual impairments.


3. Key Responsibilities

Direct Support to Learners

  • Provide individualized instruction in Braille literacy, orientation and mobility, daily living skills, and use of assistive technologies.
  • Assess learners’ educational needs and develop Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) in collaboration with parents, teachers, and professionals.
  • Track academic progress and provide continuous support and feedback.

Teacher Training and Capacity Building

  • Develop and deliver training for mainstream teachers on inclusive education, adaptive methods, and strategies for supporting visually impaired learners.
  • Offer mentorship and coaching to enhance teachers’ capacity to build inclusive classrooms.
  • Introduce and demonstrate the use of assistive technologies and accessible learning materials.

Curriculum Adaptation and Material Development

  • Support curriculum adaptation to ensure accessibility (Braille, large print, and audio formats).
  • Develop and source accessible learning resources and assistive devices.

Advocacy and Awareness

  • Advocate for equal access to quality education for visually impaired learners with government, schools, and stakeholders.
  • Promote awareness and challenge misconceptions about visual impairment.
  • Represent LNLVIP in forums, workshops, and committees on inclusive education and disability rights.

Networking and Collaboration

  • Build partnerships with government departments (especially the Ministry of Education and Training), schools, parents’ associations, and disability organizations.
  • Collaborate with LNLVIP staff on related programs and initiatives.

Reporting and Documentation

  • Maintain accurate records of assessments, interventions, and learner progress.
  • Produce regular reports on achievements, activities, and challenges.
  • Contribute to proposal development and donor reporting.

4. Qualifications and Experience

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education, Education, Disability Studies, or a related field (required).
  • Master’s Degree in a relevant field (an added advantage).

Experience

  • At least three (3) years of proven experience working with organizations of persons with disabilities in Lesotho, specifically in education or inclusive development.
  • Direct experience teaching or supporting visually impaired learners (strongly desirable).

Knowledge and Skills

  • In-depth knowledge of disability rights and inclusive education, including national and international frameworks (e.g., UNCRPD).
  • Strong understanding of inclusive education methodologies and practices.
  • Proficiency in Braille (highly advantageous).
  • Familiarity with assistive technologies for visually impaired learners.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Good organizational and time management skills.
  • Fluency in Sesotho and English (written and spoken).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
