POSITION : IMMIGRATION ASSISTANT

RESPONSIBLE TO : ASSISTANT IMMIGRATION OFFICER

JOB SUMMARY:
Under the general supervision of the Assistant Immigration Officer, the incumbent will be responsible for authorizing entry and departure; and managing checkpoint at the port of entry.
MAIN DUTIES:
1. TO AUTHORISE ENTRY AND DEPARTURE
1.1. Assesses passengers to determine eligibility for entry or departure
1.2. Verifies authenticity of visas and residence permits on arrival or departure
1.3. Verifies information on entry and departure forms
1A. Checks security features on travel documents/passports
1.5. Scans and endorses authorized period of stay on travel document for entry or authorizes departure and or denies entry or departure
1.6. Compiles checkpoint report and submits to Assistant Immigration Officer
2. TO MANAGE CHECKPOINT
2.1 Attends to checkpoint complaints
2.2 Attends and registers repatriated Lesotho citizens
2.3 Registers deceased persons
2.4 Reports on checkpoint activities
2.5 Registers deportees
JOB SPECIFICATION
Diploma in any of the Social Sciences or relevant qualification plus 2 years working experience in Immigration duties.

RESPONSIBILITY
For work of others: None.
For property: Responsible to ensure safekeeping of official documents in his/her custody.
For effect of errors: The incumbent is responsible for errors that might be committed in entry and departure transactions

Authority for decision making: The incumbent is the decision maker at the checkpoint.
Problem solving: The incumbent is the problem solver at the checkpoint.
Supervision received: Expected to work closely and reports to Assistant Immigration officer.

CONTACTS
– General public for service provision, and information. Attends to one thousand five hundred (1500) passengers per shift on average.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Unfavourable conditions: It is considered high due to weather conditions, contact with aggressive members of the public and violent members of the public.
