I want to offer a totally different perspective to emotional intelligence apart from the fact that stories are written so that they can evoke emotional response from the readers. If your audience won’t be immersed in the proceedings of a story/feature right from the start and till the end, you need to think hard the next time where you went wrong.

Apart from many other aspects, emotional intelligence is definitely involved and writers nowadays use it to make their readers glued to their book and produce a page-turner they can’t put down.

I’ll offer you the following 5 tips that you can use to come with the best strategy in evoking the desired emotions from your readers.

  1. Setting up the Story

Your storytelling skills will come into play here as there are many ways in which it can be the difference between a good and great start. You can easily connect your audience with you by telling a simple story that they want to know more about.

You can tell a story with a great morale that can boost their confidence and make them look at things in a positive way. Use simple but powerful vocabulary to say more in less space. After all, it’s just the start of your article, story, feature, etc. and not the complete story itself.

  1. Developing the Characters or Main Story

If you are coming up with a novel, then you need to develop your characters right at the forefront. Don’t beat about the bush in coming to the main plot of the story while revealing little about the climax or real motive of the characters. Please note that no one likes half-baked characters so take some time in coming up with solid characters with your audience can truly resonate with.

On the other hand, if you are writing a feature, then you need to come up with making the story credible with solid facts and figures along with references. This is really necessary so that your readers will know that they are reading a genuine feature along with every information that make it reliable to the core.

  1. Play with the Mind of the Reader to Evoke Emotions

Now to the most important part; how to emotionally engage your readers so that they can connect with your narrative right away? You need to be certain about the main plot of your story/feature and what you want to connote through it. Don’t leave the plot abruptly mid-way and try to start a new one that is fascinating you. This is a grave mistake as many readers will simply leave the story/feature midway and leave whatever they were reading.

Evoking emotions from your reader is not all about using sentimental language and cheap tactics that can drain them emotionally. Instead use sub-plots or new characters, for example to keep your readers glued to your story and also make sure they are involved in it just like you are. Don’t stress your readers so much that they feel bored or overwhelmed with what they are reading but are emotionally attached to the story. This is where you will succeed.

Final Word

This topic is certainly very broad and I am sure that this particular post will make you think about the notion of emotional intelligence in a better way.
