EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS & RELATED EXPERIENCE

• Degree in either Geography, Environmental, Safety and Health disciplines, 
• National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety
• Driver’s License (Code B)
• 5 years’ experience in Safety and Health Management
• 5 years’ experience in Trackless Mining Environment

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

• Manages, co-ordinates and controls the implementation of measures that prevent accidents/incidents, loss of Company property, and non-compliance by:
o interpreting and analyzing data, identifying in congruencies and implementing corrective plans;
o directing programs for audits and inspections, ensuring follow up action is taken to meet Mine standards;
o managing and co-ordinating SHE awareness programs and competitions;
o co-ordinates inquiries, taking cognisance of the need to preserve evidence and documentation for follow up action in reportable accidents/incidents;
o reviewing all new materials/equipment specifications to ensure safe design;
o monitoring the SHE requirements of all departments, developing training programmes to address shortfalls;
o monitoring SHE activities, e.g. meetings and inspections to ensure their effectiveness;
o conducting regular inspections on firefighting equipment and fire prevention appliances.
• Devises and implements promotional and motivational SHE schemes to ensure a high level of awareness and compliance with standards.
• Interprets and reviews SHE legislation and changes to legislation in order to:
o establish controls for continuous compliance by mine personnel;
o develop relevant policies and procedures to ensure that all legal requirements are met;
o design and implement control systems to investigate incidents and assess the legal ramifications of these, taking appropriate remedial action;
• Keep the Mine personnel informed of legal requirements.
• Ensures the safety of all personnel and minimizing loss to the Company by:
o initiating, developing, reviewing and revising emergency procedures;
o ensuring that an emergency preparedness plan is in place for effective disaster management;
o organising demonstrations and drills to ensure efficiency;
o co-ordinating the implementation of disaster plans as/when required;
o assessing requirements from feedback received.
• Ensures an effective Occupational Health service to the Mine, in conjunction with the Mine clinic, by:
o ensuring that all occupational health monitoring functions and audits are performed within time parameters as stipulated by legislation
o identifying problem areas and recommending corrective action;
o investigating occupational health incidents and recommending appropriate corrective action;
o compiling reports with regard to work progress;
o determining future standards and procedures relating to occupational health control;
• Institute and Manage a system that provides:
o assurance on an on-going basis that all necessary system requirements are in place
o planned audits are conducted
o follow-ups and reviews
o Internal – Integrated SHE Management system
o External- Environmental Management Plan
• Legal Compliance audits
• SHE Management System audits

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

• Risk Assessment and Incident Management
• Knowledge and application of Mining principles and legislation relating to SHE
• Auditing knowledge and experience
• Up to date knowledge of legal compliance, legislation etc.
• Good surface operating mining skills
• Computer literate
