PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:

This role will develop and monitor the SSA A&H UW strategy, driving high performance within the profit centre.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • To enable an efficient flow of underwriting referrals, it is essential that we have one point of contact for the Africa zone. This person is referred to as the “Head of Underwriting” – The EMEA CUO will delegate underwriting authority to the LU and the LU will be responsible for further delegating to the underwriters within the zone.
  • Any and all referrals coming to CUO must come from the HOU, with support from a business point of view from the Product Head.
  • Manage and oversight of product development for all A&H products, both new and renewal/updated products
  • The LU will be expected to make full use of their authority. A key part of the strategy for the Product Tower going forward will be training these individuals so that ultimately the referral traffic will be extremely low.
  • The position will receive underwriting authority from the EMEA Chief Underwriting Officer
  • Is responsible for delegating authority within the Zone, and maintaining records of any authority delegated and signed copies of authorities
  • Responsible for implementation, organisation and management of the referral flow within the Zone
  • Is the responsible stakeholder for any policies requiring referral to the EMEA Chief Underwriting Officer
  • Responsible for implementing and oversight of the underwriting policy as directed by the EMEA Chief Underwriting Officer along with any training associated therewith.
  • Manage the self-audit process within the Zone
  • Co-ordinates information and scheduling of Underwriting Audits within the Zone. Develop and implement action plans based on audit recommendations and findings.
  • Achieve an overall satisfactory audit finding/improved audit finding based on the previous audit finding.
  • Direct accountability for the underwriting results with respect to profitability, business mix aligns with pricing assumptions and loss ratio of all risks classifications – manage the CR on all books of underwriting
  • Oversight and management of Peer Reviews, including own up the ladder
  • Oversight of contractual documentation including policy wording and sign-off
  • Manage relationship with all relevant stakeholders, i.e. legal, compliance, regulatory and actuarial
  • Demonstrate understanding of regulatory and compliance processes and actively participate in relevant governance committees

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent preferable.

EXPERIENCE:

Minimum of 7 plus years of technical A&H underwriting and managing a team of underwriters.

  • Process and system skills
  • Strong customer service ethic, with a sound understanding of the business processes
  • Aware of legal and regulatory requirements
  • Knowledge of market segmentation, portfolio management, acquisition and multiple distribution systems
  • Strong presentation, prioritization, and time management – deadline driven
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team
  • Re-insurance experience
  • An in-depth understanding of aggregation monitoring
