Bertha House is a multi-purpose facility designed to serve activists including organisers, educators, storytellers, and other changemakers working to build a more just city, country and planet. We aim to provide inclusive, stimulating, safe and exciting spaces in which a diverse range of people and groups can come together to work, organise, learn, create, and collaborate.

Located in Mowbray, Bertha House plans on growing its occupants and offerings to include an activist cowork community, expanded events and activity spaces, a cafe, a media and storytelling lab, and a cinema.

The Bertha House project is much more than just a building. It is about growing and nurturing a vibrant community of people wanting to change the world a place that is recognized locally and globally as a hub for collaboration and innovation in activism.

In Bertha House we also aim to build an alternative model of how workspaces are managed – where membership and access is not based on exclusive fees, but rather a practised commitment to justice, community, reciprocity, cooperation, and mutual aid.

About The Role:

Bertha endeavours to build an inclusive and representative team that embraces diversity. As this is a new initiative we are looking for a team-player with the ability and experience to establish and implement new systems and policies necessary for healthy operations and sustainable growth. The Head of Operations will work closely with Bertha House’s Director and be accountable for overall building operations, human resources and financial management. 

Key Responsibilities:
Developing and implementing operational systems
Developing and implementing a set of human resources and staff policies
Ensuring the optimal day-to-day running/operations of the building
Developing and implementing a set of policies for building tenants, guests and visitors
Developing and implementing procurement policies
Liaising with contractors and service providers
Overseeing health and safety policies in practice (including COVID-19 safety)
Budgeting, income/expenditure, and cash flow monitoring
Ensuring fiduciary and regulatory compliance including audit preparation
Experience & Requirements:
Experience developing and implementing operational systems
Minimum 5 years experience in a senior operations post
Experience in HR and financial management and systems
A graduate level degree in operations and/or business management and/or finance or equivalent
Experience working in the social justice, social impact / innovation, or NGO sector
Advanced Microsoft Excel proficiency and experience working with other financial management and bookkeeping tools (familiarity with Xero preferable)
Exceptional organisational, multitasking and project management skills
Experience in property or building management preferable
Strong relational and interpersonal skills
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Speaking more than one South African language preferable
Understanding of activist work and networks
Experience working in a start-up environment preferable
