Scalabrini Centre is a registered non-profit organization, founded by the Catholic congregation of the Scalabrinians, committed to fostering integration between migrants, refugees and South Africans. Scalabrini Centre advocates for respect for human rights and uses a holistic approach that considers all basic needs. Position Summary: Lead the advocacy work of the Scalabrini Centre, by developing and implementing strategic interventions to strengthen legal protections and realization of rights of mobile populations, address discrimination in, and assist with access to, the South African asylum system and sectors including law and order, labour, education and health.

Scalabrini Centre of Cape Town seeks to appoint a Head of Advocacy and legal advisor to be based in Cape Town.

Reports to: Executive director and the Strategic advocacy executive committee

Work Hours: 40 hours

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Conduct high-level advocacy regarding legislation/policy, as well as strategic litigation
Provide leadership, strategic advice, and technical legal capacity on the specific objectives of the Advocacy Programme
Management of the advocacy programme and team leader
Media interlocutor
Report writing and grant management

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

LLB or equivalent
Admission as an attorney or advocate of the High Court of South Africa
Minimum of five years’ experience in the advocacy field
Litigation experience
Research and writing skills with excellent written and verbal communication skills
Excellent people and programme management skills
Two recent and contactable references, one of which must be work related
Experience in working with refugees and migrants
