CAPRISA is an award-winning global research organisation located on the campus of the Nelson Mandela School of Medicine in Durban, South Africa and undertakes research in HIV, TB and Covid at four clinical research sites in KwaZulu-Natal.

CAPRISA’s goal is to undertake globally relevant and locally responsive research that contributes to understanding HIV Vaccines and Pathogenesis, Prevention and Epidemiology, the links between Tuberculosis and AIDS treatment and Covid-19. CAPRISA is a UNAIDS Collaborating Centre for HIV Research and Policy and is recognised as a DSI-NRF Centre of Excellence in HIV Prevention and hosts the SAMRC HIV-TB Pathogenesis and Treatment Research Unit.

The successful incumbent will ensure that an effective and efficient data management service is provided. Provide overall leadership, strategic direction, technical data management expertise and management of the CAPRISA Data Management department. Ensure efficient, high quality and optimal delivery of clinical data management services. Provide technical support to the clinical teams and provide continuous oversight of the clinical data. Ensure timeous database set up and programming for new studies, and cleaning for efficient generation of clinical results. Responsible for advancing data-driven solutions within the organization.

Qualifications and experience:

At least 3 years data management experience, preferably in a senior role or relevant experience in a comparable position
Relevant Bachelor’s degree or 3 year diploma (IT/Computer programming or another relevant field)
Database programming in SQL on any relational database system (e.g. MSSQL, MySQL, Oracle, FoxPro and/or Access)
Computer programming language such as C-Programming, Python, JAVA, PHP, etc.
Interactive data visualization skills (e.g. Microsoft Power BI, Google sheets, Google Data Studio)
Demonstrated experience in leading a team
In depth understanding of data management practices and tools
Experience in clinical trial environment and clinical data management practices and tools is preferred
DFdiscover/DataFax or another clinical data management system (e.g. Oracle Clinical, Medidata, Epidata, REDCap) is preferred

Administrate Data Management Systems
Maintain day-to-day oversight of the data department to ensure that CAPRISA and study requirements are met
Provide training to the data management team
Provide line manager responsibilities to Data management staff
Assist with study setup
Assist sites with development and implementation of efficient data management processes
Develop and maintain study databases to ensure clinical data accuracy
Participate in the design and protocol development of the new study/project.
Prepare study data reports
Provide regular verbal and written reports to management, collaborators and other stakeholders
Keep up to date with the latest data management trends, technologies & practices
