Purpose of Activity/Assignment:

UNICEF’s publications require layout in InDesign, optimized for print and web. UNICEF Lesotho therefore requires an experienced graphic designer to undertake professional design and layout of its 70-page Design of the Lesotho COVID-19 publications in English and deliver the final products in both .pdf and .indd formats.

Scope of the work: Based on the template and design of a series of research publications, produce draft layouts and final files (print-ready files, in InDesign and web-optimized pdf.

Work Assignment Overview:

To undertake the task, the consultant will be required to:

• Ensure design follows the correct, most up-to-date UNICEF’s guidance on style and brand (to be provided by UNICEF);

• Ensure design of the figures accurately reflect the data provided and the publication style guidelines;

• Check that all text, footnotes, references, annexes and figures/tables are included;

• Ensure, in the case of web versions, that the web links are included and are functional;

• Ensure, in the case of print versions, that the web links are written out in full and are correct;

• Propose ways to improve data visualizations and present options for user-friendly attractive layouts;

• Deliver web-ready and print-ready formats within the timeframe agreed with UNICEF Lesotho, according to the length/complexity of the publication and any potential launch date, which may necessitate a tight timeframe;

• Work with the Communications Specialist for up to three rounds of corrections for each publication

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • Minimum qualification required – Bachelors’ Degree
  • At least five (5) years’ operating as professional graphic designer.
  • Experience working in the fields of graphic design, brochure design, logo design, web design and development, designing for print.
  • Ability to produce high quality design in InDesign.
  • Working experience with academic, research and/or technical publications reports.
  • Experience working with UNICEF and UN agencies is an asset 6. Capacity to undertake layout in English and to deliver the final product in both .pdf and .indd formats.
  • Fluency in English

Individuals engaged under a consultancy or individual contract will not be considered “staff members” under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations and UNICEF’s policies and procedures, and will not be entitled to benefits provided therein (such as leave entitlements and medical insurance coverage). Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws.

The selected candidate is solely responsible to ensure that the visa (applicable) and health insurance required to perform the duties of the contract are valid for the entire period of the contract. Selected candidates are subject to confirmation of fully-vaccinated status against SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) with a World Health Organization (WHO)-endorsed vaccine, which must be met prior to taking up the assignment. It does not apply to consultants who will work remotely and are not expected to work on or visit UNICEF premises, programme delivery locations or directly interact with communities UNICEF works with, nor to travel to perform functions for UNICEF for the duration of their consultancy contracts.
