Geotechnical Engineer – Drill and Blast Final Wall Control

Letšeng seeks to engage a qualified Mosotho professional with appropriate skills and aptitude to fill the position of TRAINEE GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEER-DRILL AND BLAST FINAL WALL CONTROL (PATERSON BAND CL).

PURPOSE: Reporting to the Geotechnical Manager, the Trainee Geotechnical Engineer will assist the Geotechnical Engineer to maintain a geotechnical final wall control strategy for Letšeng Diamonds’ Mining Operations; to undertake final wall slope appraisals for mine to limit control; maintain good final wall integrity practices in place; input into slope stability analyses and pit design recommendations; to maintain safe work procedures and any other related geotechnical functions.

MAIN OUTPUTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Undertake mapping of mining blocks prior to blasting and provide the drill and blast engineer with the geotechnical characteristic of the block for good fragmentation and good high wall integrity
• Advice the drill and blast engineer on the structures which can temper with the expected outcomes of the blast e.g. horizontal joints which can cause the runoff
• Assist with Drilling and blasting quality assurance and quality control (QAQC) involvement. Including feedback to the drill and blast sections on the quality of previous pre-splits, and involvement in blast design adjustments
• Generate daily, weekly and monthly draft reports in relation to all the monitoring work and for any other related geotechnical functions
• Attend to any other geotechnical functions deemed appropriate for the role and that which may be requested by management for the effective functioning of the geotechnical department
• Commit to the training development plan developed as part and parcel of trainee’s upskilling (performance review, talent review, etc.)
• Complies with all HSE policies and procedures

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
• A four-year Honours Degree in Engineering Geology or Geotechnical/Mining Engineering or equivalent
• Exposure/Experience in Drill & Blast and Geotechnical Final Wall Control activities would be an advantage
• Light Motor Vehicle Driver’s Licence

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES, KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

• Team player and an ability to learn in order to assist in maintaining systems and procedures for sound geotechnical engineering controls and practices
• Good PC skills and computer literacy, including adequate training in standard geotechnical software packages
• Attention to detail, problem-solving and good report writing skills
