Letšeng Diamonds seeks to engage a Lesotho professional with appropriate skills and aptitude to fill the position of:
Geoscience Assistant (Patterson Band BU) x1 Vacancy
Purpose
To assist Geologists and Geotechnical Engineers with operational duties, including the collection, preparation, testing, documentation, and management of core and grab samples. The role will also support the Geotechnical function with Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) activities relating to highwall support.
Main Outputs and Responsibilities
1. Technical Responsibilities
- Oversees and manages the daily operations in the core shed.
- Collects rock samples from the pits after blasts for both Geology density testing and Geotechnical point load testing.
- Measures densities of rock samples from blasted material.
- Assists in conducting point load tests to determine the strength and competency of the rock mass.
- Cuts, labels and stores rock slabs in the storage area.
- Sorts belt cut samples at the metlab for dilution counts.
- Collects and photographs tailings sampled at the plant discharge areas.
- Assists with collecting, packaging and preparing samples to be sent to external laboratories.
- Acts as a safety spotter during in-pit geological and geotechnical mapping.
- Supports depressurisation monitoring by obtaining flow rate measurements from the installed depressurisation holes to help assess water pressure behind the pit walls.
- Conducts Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC) inspections on support systems implemented by the Rope Access Team, ensuring that support installations meet geotechnical design and safety standards.
- Photographs and moves core samples in and out of containers.
- Measures densities, magnetic susceptibility of core and dilution on the core.
- Oversees and manages core storage and continuously monitors that the core is well kept.
2. Quality Control and Quality Assurance
- Ensures accurate labelling and storage of all rock samples.
- Verifies and distributes density and magnetic susceptibility data to geologists.
- Conducts regular inspection of the core shed equipment.
- Maintains high standards in specimen handling and data integrity.
3. Reporting
- Ensures all data collected is recorded and circulated to prospective individuals.
- Communicates all events and changes at the core shed.
Qualification and Experience Required
- A Cambridge Overseas School Certificate (COSC) or equivalent. Mathematics and Science are added advantage.
- Basic computer literacy (Microsoft Office).
- Valid Light Vehicle Driver’s Licence.
- Valid Level 1 Rope Access Certificate.

- Ability to lift heavy core boxes safely.
- Good record-keeping and attention to detail.

- Knowledge of workplace health, safety and environment rules.
