Job Description:

Production of maps and data analyzing – (50%)

  • Analyzing photogrammetry data with mapping software.
  • Discovering DRR patterns and trends through mapping of data towards informing EWS
  • Designing maps with geographic data and other data sources.
  • Creating “shapefiles” to merge topographical data with external data by layering external data over a topographical map.
  • Producing maps showing the spatial distribution of various kinds of data, including grass cover, trees, type of houses, valleys, soil erosion formed dongas etc.
  • Utilizing mapping applications and tools.
  • Converting physical maps into a digital form for computer usage.
  • Performing data munging and cleaning to convert data into its desired form.
  • Produce reports on geographic data utilizing data visualizations.
  • Managing a digital library of geographic maps in various file types.

Facilitate use of the mapping system (10%)

  • Support the drone pilots and Project Officers in development of maps and interpretation
  • Ensure map guidelines are applied appropriately,
  • Coordinate mapping processes and activities at the sites / district levels.
  • Build relationships with the United Nations, iNGO’s, Universities and other organizations as appropriate and assist in developing mechanisms to improve inter-agency cooperation, collaboration and coordination using GIS technologies

Communicate and utilize mapping data – (10%)

  • Collate mapping data from across project implementation areas to ensure donor requirements and targets are met
  • Provide technical support to local programming teams so that they can utilize their mapping data with different stakeholders
  • Support project staff to use mapping data to adapt or refine programme implementation
  • Provide support to district and national report writing activities.

Facilitate learning and best practices in mapping ​- (10%)

  • Support project teams to design and facilitate reflection and lessons learned sessions in relation to mapping activities
  • Support local project teams identify bottlenecks in mapping and implement strategies for addressing them

Plan mapping linking them with Community Disaster Preparedness Plans – ​(5%)

  • Facilitate scoping with key stakeholders, including ToR, strategic indicators, and to clarify what information is needed for the CDPP indicator
  • Develop budget, staffing plans and schedule,
  • Determine roles and responsibilities to support the mapping process and communicate these
  • Develop the basic information sheet to clarify and summarize key information from the maps
  • Ensure WV policies on child protection and measurement protocols are clarified and followed faithfully throughout
  • Develop sampling plan and coordinate with field staff to inform relevant community members, including children
  • Coordinate with field staff and partners to ensure the appropriate timing schedule for mapping and feedback
  • Critically analyze and adapt maps as necessary to respond to field reality

Develop or adapt measurement tools – (5%)

  • Develop and/or adapt standard tools in consultation with technical specialists and field staff/partners for drone mappings

Utilization and Use of Baseline/Evaluation findings – (5%)

  • Share the preliminary findings with community members, staff and partners using appropriate means, to validate the findings and seek feedback on the process
  • Participate in reflection and learning with staff and partners to refine our interpretation of the findings once they have been validated

Knowledge management – (5%)

  • Apply basic programme management approaches(develop work plans, monitor, execute and report on work plans)
  • Facilitate learning from drone piloting and mapping processes
  • Facilitate proper management of knowledge through WV and donor systems.

Minimum education, training and experience requirements to qualify for the position:

  • Degree in Computer Science, Geography, Surveying, Engineering or related field.
  • 2-3 years of experience with drone piloting and GIS for an NGO or grant funded project.
  • Experience: Direct Drone piloting and GIS experience with grant funded programming.

Knowledge, Skills and Attributes:

  • Proficiency with drone piloting and usage of mapping software
  • Proficiency with front-end design languages such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript and various mapping languages.
  • Experience with mapping tools such as PIX4D, PIX4D Mapper, QGIS
  • Experience with GPS measuring tools.
  • Outstanding quantitative skill set.
