Geneva Centre of Humanitarian Studies 25-year anniversary

3
Context

The humanitarian sector has undergone significant changes over the last 25 years. The nature of conflicts has changed, impacting higher-income nations and necessitating a shift in healthcare and aid priorities, including addressing chronic illnesses in conflict zones. Despite increased funding and expertise, the humanitarian system struggles to handle the scale and intensity of modern crises. A reimagined, inclusive humanitarian system involving local actors is essential.

Celebrating 25 years of innovation in research and teaching, the Geneva Centre of Humanitarian Studies will take stock of the history, evolution, and future of humanitarian studies through a series of keynote speeches and panel discussions.

Evening’s programme

Yves Flückiger, the University of Geneva’s Rector, and Marie-Laure Salles, the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies’ Director, will welcome the audience with the words of introduction.

First, Prof. Alessandro Monsutti, the President of the Centre’s Board of Directors, will deliver a message. Following that, Gilles Carbonnier, the Vice-President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), will give his speech.

After that, there will be a discussion panel moderated by Dr Valérie Gorin, followed by a Q&A session. To conclude the evening, Prof. Karl Blanchet, the Centre’s Director, will deliver closing remarks.
