Background

The International Institute of Humanitarian Law is an independent, non-profit, humanitarian association founded in 1970 in Sanremo, Italy. The Institute organizes training courses in the fields of international humanitarian law, human rights, refugee law and related issues and promotes dialogue by organizing international conferences, meetings and seminars of high level government officials, scholars and practitioners.

The mission of the Department of International Refugee Law and Migration Law is to enhance the knowledge and skills of government officials, international organizations, civil society representatives, and academics involved in working with individuals in need of protection, including refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs), stateless individuals, and migrants. Through its capacity-building initiatives and the exchange of experiences, the Department advocates for the preservation of human rights, thus complementing and augmenting the efforts of various stakeholders in the field of protection.

The Institute enjoys a consultative status at ECOSOC, a participatory status at the Council of Europe and holds observer status at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) ExCom, and with the International Organization for Migration.

Roles and Function

The Fundraising Consultant will design and implement the 3-year resource mobilization strategy of the Department. The Fundraising Consultant is a seasoned expert who brings with her/him a network of partners from the governmental, multilateral, non-governmental, and/or private sectors. The role holder will work under the supervision and overall guidance of the Director of the Department.

The main functions of the role holder are as follows:

  • Analyze the current fundraising approach of the Department and develop a 3-year fundraising and resource mobilization strategy for the Department.
  • Defines implementation mechanisms, including planning, forecasting, and quality control during the process;
  • Oversees the mapping of existing and new funding opportunities, including UN agencies, intergovernmental organizations, governments, foundations, private sector, and others;
  • Identifies projects and initiatives with funding that the Department could implement in line with its mandate;
  • Supervises design of material required for presentation of the program and special projects of the Department;
  • Leads discussions with potential donors and coordinates the submission of project proposals and follow-up steps.

Required Qualifications and Experience

Required

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree) in Fundraising or strategic partnerships, international affairs, law, social sciences or related area is required;
  • At least 8+ years of fundraising experience with governments, INGOs, foundations/philanthropists, and the private sector.
  • Demostrated experience in working with various funding mechanisms;
  • Excellent relationship management and communication skills;
  • Ability to work as a member of team, with people of different cultural backgrounds.

Desirable

  • Experience in managing remote teams;
  • Experience is representing senior management in public fora;
  • Experience in working with the United Nations or NGOs supporting refugees, IDPs, stateless persons and migrants.

Language and Technical skills:

Required

  • Fluency in English (both oral and written)

Desirable

  • Fluency in Arabic or French

Remuneration and Contractual Information:

  • If selected, you would be offered a 3-month individual consultancy contract with the possibility for further extensions, subject to the availability of funds.
  • The envisaged starting date is as soon as possible.
  • You can perform the work remotely from any location except when you need to be available for online meetings or on-site in Sanremo or Geneva. Your performance will be measured based on the outputs and deliverables.
  • You will be expected to be available to perform the services for an average of 18 days per month during the contract duration. You will agree on the days with your supervisor.
  • The starting fee is set at 3500 EUR per month. You will be responsible for payment of social security contributions and taxes, if applicable, and the Institute will pay no contributions in this regard. The Institute will provide travel insurance coverage, terminal expenses, tickets, accommodation, and per diem in case you are required to travel on behalf of the Institute.
