Funda Wande is an influential not for profit program founded by the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation Endowment and donor partners. Working closely with government it aims to ensure that all children in South Africa can read for meaning in their home-language by the age of 10. They develop video and print materials in all official South African languages to train teachers how to teach reading for meaning in Grades R-3 in those languages. All of our materials are free to access, and Creative Commons licensed. In February 2019, Funda Wande opened the Port Elizabeth office and started implementing the Funda Wande intervention in 30 schools within the Eastern Cape. Reporting to the Program Manager, the Office and Logistics Coordinator is responsible for supporting the Funda Wande team in the Eastern Cape with all travel and logistics requests as well as ensuring the efficient day-to-day running of the office.

Funda Wande seeks to appoint Senior Literacy Specialist to be based in Cape Town or JHB.

Employment type: One-year contract with the possibility of renewal.

Starting date: 7 January 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The purpose of the position will be to design, develop and deliver appropriate learning solutions for execution in the organisation’s interventions, and for public use in the education early grade reading sector. The role reports to the Head of Versioning.

Responsibilities:

  • Plan & organise all elements of the learning design process and platform, from conceptualisation to product delivery
  • Quality assurance of the advanced certificate/short courses
  • Create a structured learning design process for new versions of the course in different languages
  • Provide thought leadership as the LD subject matter expert, including style guidelines, methodology, delivery mechanisms, etc
  • Design contemporary, appropriate and engaging learning solutions by leveraging technology and developing curricula using a variety of interactive modalities such as e-learning, simulations, mobile, video
  • Act as dedicated content writer and editor

Requirements:

  • Successful track record of writing content, curriculum design, learning design, or instructional design for teachers.
  • Graduate or ideally Masters
  • Experience working in or with South African schools in low-fee contexts and early grade reading projects.
  • Excellent presentation and communications skills
  • Reading and writing skills in another African language would be advantageous.
