Front-end Engineer

Front-end Engineer (Design team)Hello, there.

We’re Help Scout. A company you’ve heard of before, or maybe not, but either way you’ve landed on this page because you were at least a little curious, and we like that about you. We spend our time making it easier for SMBs to talk with their customers. Today Help Scout is used by more than 9,000 businesses in 140 countries.

We’re looking for someone who’s really smart, and humble, and thorough, and meticulous, and self-motivated, and kind, and a little funny, and tenacious, and did I say self-motivated? Well, that’s because we’re a remote company! Being remote is fantastic, it’s empowering, and it’s perfect for people who like to be their own boss and push themselves to be at their very best every day. It’s also perfect for people who hate wearing pants or enjoy going out for ice cream at 4:18pm because it was nice outside and they just felt like it.

That’s where you come in! If you’re a Front-end Engineer with those qualities, chances are you would love to work at Help Scout.

About the role

  • You’ll be the go-to person for our marketing website, helpscout.com. You’ll create new pages, re-work old ones, and generally help us create a brand experience that makes people feel all warm and fuzzy.
  • Since you’ll be focused on public websites instead of the product, this role sits on our 8-person Design team. You’ll also be working hand-in-hand with some wonderful colleagues on the Marketing team to make beautiful things.
  • One day you might be building a new page alongside a designer. The next day you might be writing some JavaScript to get an interaction or animation juuuuuust right. You’ll also have time to refactor, optimize, and prioritize less visible projects that’ll make a difference for customers and for the team. The work you do will help many of your teammates be at their best and work efficiently. Pretty exciting, right?
  • For the really technical stuff — like fixing an issue with the CI pipeline or writing a Jekyll plugin in Ruby — we’ll make sure you have support from the Engineering team. You don’t have to know it all.
  • This role also involves a good deal of project management. You’ll be responsible for driving (or co-driving) projects forward, communicating with others about tasks, and making sure things get shipped.
  • Since you’ll be the most technical person working on the marketing site, many folks will lean on you for advice and direction. You’ll help them level up their coding skills, familiarize them with the codebase, and empower them to work more independently.

About you

  • You love writing beautiful, scalable, semantic HTML and CSS. As a matter of fact, it’s what you are best at. You are also comfortable writing basic JavaScript, although we won’t ask you to build single-page apps or anything complicated.
  • Your best work happens at the intersection of design and engineering — bringing a project to life. You can take a spec document and a Sketch file, transform it into a fully-functioning web page, and make sure every interaction is on point.
  • You are used to partnering with a few stakeholders and thrive at managing projects through to completion. If you’ve ever worked in an agency or as a freelancer, you’ll probably feel right at home.
  • You’re a systems thinker, passionate about writing code that scales and stands the test of time. Most importantly, it’s code anyone can understand and enhance without asking you for help.
  • You’re always looking for new ways to stay on top of your craft as the industry evolves.
  • You can get psyched about using tools likeSeed and Jekyll, a couple of open source projectsthat power our website.
  • The idea of helping to move our business forward acrossthreevectors — Growth, Content, and Brand — is really exciting and rewarding to you.
  • To optimize collaboration and success for this role, we’re looking for folks living in EST to PST time zones.

Bonus points

  • Our marketing site is powered by a single Jekyll instance, which has a complicated build process. It’s a delicate dance between tools like Node.js, Ruby, Gulp and some other packages to optimize our website for flexibility, speed, and scale. Having experience with these sorts of environments would be tremendously helpful.

Who you’ll be working with:

  • Linda Eliasen, Head of Design – You’ll be reporting to Linda, who’s not only in charge of the Design team, but leads many of our brand initiatives.
  • Justine Jordan, CMO – A designer in a former life, Justine leads the marketing strategy at Help Scout.
  • Bronwyn Gruet, Designer – Many of the beautiful illustrations and textures you see on the website were created by Bronwyn.
  • Matt Plays, Designer – You’ll be working alongside Matt regularly on layout, interaction, polish, and presentation.
  • Erik Blad, Brand Designer – Erik has a real gift for animation and bringing our brand to life. He’ll make your work a lot of fun.
