APPLICATIONS ARE INVITED FROM SUITABLY QUALIFIED LOCAL CANDIDATES FOR THE FOLLOWING POSITIONS IN THE MINISTRY OF ENVIRONMENT AND FORESTRY.

JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision of the Area Forester, the Forest Ranger will be responsible for forest management activities, marketing of standing trees, forest protection and general management of a pole treatment plant.


MAIN DUTIES

1. FOREST MANAGEMENT

1.1 Carries-out marking for pitting on the tree planting site to ensure that proper spacing of trees is maintained.
1.2 Supervises pitting on forest sites to prepare for planting.
1.3 Supervises planting of trees to ensure high survival rate.
1.4 Leads fire break maintenance operations to prevent wildfires from damaging forest reserves.
1.5 Directs de-stumping operations to ease manoeuvres during land preparation and planting.
1.6 Supervises brushing/pruning operations to protect trees against fire and to improve wood quality.
1.7 Supervises tree thinning to reduce competition and thereby improve tree growth rate.

2. FOREST PROTECTION

2.1 Carries-out routine inspection of forest reserves for diseases and pests and reports to management.
2.2 Removes/impounds trespassing animals in forest reserves in order to reduce damage by small and large livestock.
2.3 Takes legal action on people found illegally felling trees in forest reserves in order to ensure that members of public/community respect forest reserves.

3. MARKETING OF STANDING TREES

3.1 Carries-out trifling of forest stands to determine the amount of wood.
3.2 Notifies the public on wood sale dates.
3.3 Informs the public/communities on new wood prices to enable the public to make proper budgets for wood sales and compare with other alternatives.

4. GENERAL MANAGEMENT OF A POLE TREATMENT PLANT

4.1 Identifies suitable tree stands for pole production.
4.2 Measures, marks and grades poles to required specifications.
4.3 Conducts and supervises pole preparation for treatment, treatment and dispatch.
4.4 Keeps records on pole production and reports back to Head Office.


EDUCATION AND TRAINING

C.O.S.C / Any Secondary Education Certificate with a minimum of four (4) passes.
