FIRST CLASS MAGISTRATE

Responsible to: Senior Resident Magistrate
Job Summary:
Responsible for hearing and deciding criminal and civil cases where the monetary jurisdiction does not exceed M15,000.00 and a fine of M20,000.00, or 10 years’ maximum imprisonment in criminal matters.
Main Duties:
- Adjudicates over criminal applications and trials
- Conducts remands, pre-trial enquiries, and bail hearings
- Determines admissibility of evidence and delivers judgments
- Presides over civil cases including custody and maintenance matters
- Delivers written judgments within 60 days and reviews cases from Local and Central Courts
Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Laws (LLB) plus 3 years’ experience as a Second-Class Magistrate or Judge’s Clerk
