The Controller reports to the Director of Finance and will develop and implement financial operations, systems, policies and practices to ensure that Thousand Currents can manage and adapt during a period of rapid growth and change, with evolving programs and new initiatives, partnerships and revenue streams.  Under the direction of the Director of Finance, the Controller provides leadership, technical expertise, practical knowledge, strategic thinking and problem-solving skills to the finance functions.

The core responsibilities of the Controller position are centered on the following:

Controller Role Priorities

  •       Financial Management & General Ledger – 45%

○        Partner with the Director of Finance to analyze the current financial infrastructure and scope out and implement the next level of financial systems needed to scale operations

○        Proactively monitor financial risks to develop, promote, and maintain best accounting practices and solid internal controls

○        Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems, ensuring compliance with appropriate Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) standards and regulatory requirements

○        Serve as the primary contact to the organization’s external audit firm to prepare and manage the organization’s annual audit and 990

○        Oversee payroll processing under PEO, ensuring staff time is appropriately allocated across funds

○        Own organization wide budgeting process; oversee clear and efficient process and assist departments in developing sound budgets annually

  •       Financial Analysis & Reporting – 40%

○        Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records and documentation

○        Manage the monthly financial reporting process

○        Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for senior management and the board of directors and develop dashboards and metrics to elevate financial reporting

○        Collaborate with staff to prepare budgets and provide other supporting financial information for proposals for public and private contracts, grants, and gifts

○        Monitor spending and uphold compliance to government contract requirements, identifying allowable costs, areas of over- and under- spending, and provide timely solutions and corrections if needed

  •       Team Management & Administration – 15%

○        Provide ongoing coaching, guidance, and feedback to finance staff to ensure the team’s continuous development

○        Optimize and coordinate team processes for greater efficiency

Ideal Candidate

Our ideal candidate brings…

  •       Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting best practices, CPA preferred
  •       Past experience excelling in a non-profit, high-growth environment
  •       Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate financial information effectively to non-financial stakeholders
  •       8+ years of professional experience with at least 3 years in management/leadership roles within a nonprofit setting
  •       Enthusiasm for analyzing financial technology needs and implementing new and improved systems across teams
  •       Technological savvy, advanced knowledge of accounting and reporting software
  •       Commitment to the mission and values of Thousand Currents

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The physical demands of this position are light with the expectation that the staff person can exert up to 20 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Light work usually requires walking or standing to a significant degree.  Physical demands are in excess of those of sedentary work. The position requires frequent computer use at a workstation. As Thousand Currents staff work in a number of locations and come together for meetings on occasion, all staff must be able to travel by car and plane to meetings at locations nationally and internationally. Availability to travel and maintenance of a valid passport is required.
