The South African Federation for Mental Health (SAFMH) is a NGO that aims to coordinate, monitor and promote services for persons with intellectual disability, psychiatric disability as well as promoting mental health and well-being.

SA Federation seeks to appoint a Finance Officer position is based at the SA Federation for Mental Health in Ferndale, Gauteng.

The Finance Officer takes overall responsibility for implementing sound financial processes and for managing the finances of the organisation, from capturing of finance data and finance administration up to annual audit preparations and the development of financial strategies.

The ideal candidate has extensive financial management and grant administration experience in the South African non-profit sector and is passionate about contributing to the financial sustainability of non-profit organisations. The SAFMH Finance Officer needs to be able to both provide overall strategic insight regarding all finance matters of the organisation, as well as have a keen eye for the detail necessary in sound finance administration.

Responsibilities :
Finance Administration:
Ensure accurate and timeous capturing of all finance data on Sage Evolution
Ensure sound financial administration, including the preparation of documents and keeping hard- copy and electronic finance files up-to-date
Ensure accurate and timeous payment preparations
Debtor and Creditor control
Ensure sound administration of petty cash and debit / credit card payments
Oversee the capturing of donations and issuing of Section 18A donation receipts to donors
Assist National Executive Director with documentation for payroll administration, when required
Ensure sound procurement procedures with assistance of the relevant staff
Ensure that all tax invoices received are in line with SARS standards
Ensure timeous submission of all VAT reconciliations and handling all queries with regards to VAT
Ensure timeous submission of Annual Income Tax Returns with SARS
Ensure availability of up-to-date asset register with assistance of the relevant staff Finance Reporting & Audit Preparations
Develop and submit monthly financial management reports
Keep up-to-date project expenditure monitoring schedule, including staff time reconciliations
Develop regular projections with regards to cash flow and investments
Prepare for and manage annual audit process in liaison with National Executive Director and Treasurer Grant Administration
Draw up sustainable project budgets for grant proposals in liaison with National Executive Director and Deputy Director
Ongoing monitoring of grant budgets, flagging potential expenditure challenges timeously
Develop financial reports in line with grant giver’s / funder’s guidelines Financial Oversight & Budgeting
Draw up annual project and consolidated budgets in liaison with National Executive Director and Deputy Director
Analyse financial trends of the organisation and keep management up-to-date with developments
Develop strategies to keep financial processes of organisation relevant and in line with legal requirements
Analyse organisation’s cost structures regularly to ensure the organisation’s financial sustainability
Regular updating of organisation’s finance policy
Requirements:
Relevant tertiary degree in accounting and / or finance management
Minimum of 3 years’ experience in managing finances in the South African non-profit sector
Knowledge of Sage Evolution would be an advantage
Experience in budget development and grant administration
Ability to see the bigger picture and make recommendations about the organisation’s financial strategies and procedures
Highly organised, enthusiastic and results driven
Ability to use initiative and work autonomously and remotely, if necessary
Ability to interpret and implement written guidelines
Focus and attention to detail
Good verbal and written communication skills and the ability to liaise with stakeholders
A valid driver’s license and own vehicle would be an advantage
